When everyone gathered in the dining hall, Richard recounted the events at the police station, carefully censoring the details to protect the children. Mrs. Swan and Emily burst into tears upon hearing the news that Emily's name was cleared and the criminals were caught.

'Well, that's the first good news,' Richard said, smiling. 'After dessert, I'll share another piece of good news.' He glanced at Emily, who quickly looked away to hide her flushed face.

Since last night, even hearing Richard's name made her heart race. Now, with Richard himself looking at her with such love, she wasn't sure how to hide her flustered feelings.

Dinner was a fun affair that night. The atmosphere was light and joyous. The kids laughed at Jake's jokes, Mrs. Swan shared stories of Richard's childhood, and Richard and Emily kept stealing glances at each other.

After a hearty supper and some ice cream, Hayden asked, 'Dad, what was the second good news you were going to tell us?'

'Yes, dessert is almost over now. Please tell us. Then we can have more ice cream to celebrate!' Lily added, and everyone laughed.

Richard looked at Emily, their eyes locking as if there was no one else in the room. His eyes were full of affection, while Emily's showed a mix of nervousness and shyness. Richard stood up from his seat without breaking eye contact, walked toward Emily, and stopped in front of her.

Emily stood up as well, fully aware of everyone watching them. Richard smiled and mouthed, 'Relax.'

Emily gave him a smile and took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves.

'I love you, Emily, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want us to live together, support each other, and love each other. These past few months have been tough, but you have been there for me, even when you weren't near. Together, we can conquer any obstacle. I don't care what people might say—I just can't imagine my life without you anymore. Will you marry me?' Richard said, his voice calm and steady. He extended his hand toward Emily.

There was a hush around them, except for the occasional sniffle from Mrs. Swan. Everyone held their breath, waiting for Emily's response.

Emily's tears flowed silently. Without making him wait any longer, she placed her hand in Richard's and said, 'Yes.'

An uproar of cheers erupted around them. Lily and Hayden clapped furiously, Jake whistled, and Mrs. Swan cried even more, unable to contain her happiness.

Richard took out a ring box from his pocket and slid a delicate diamond ring onto Emily's finger. It was a perfect match for her delicate hand. He kissed her hand and pulled her into a hug.

Emily hid her face in his chest, her cheeks turning crimson.

Jake took out his mobile and captured the moment in a memorable picture, which was later framed and hung in Richard and Emily's bedroom.

And so the beginning of a happily ever after began.
