Forty-seven: I'm Here.

!!!

"Henderson," Steve called as he unlocked the door. "That super walkie of yours better reach Pennhurst."

Dustin didn't give a reply, opening the front passenger and sliding in. Y/n opened the door for her girlfriend, the redhead tossing her bag in, but not getting in herself. Instead, she looked back to the house and froze in that position, staring at the structure. Y/n immediately noticed, grabbing the girl's shoulder. "Max?"

The girl in question turned, relieving Y/n some. Not completely, but some.

"You okay?"

Max just nodded, about to get in the car, but gesturing for Y/n to get in first. Y/n glanced in the car, realizing Lucas was in there, and Max probably didn't want to sit in between the two. She slid into the car, settling in the middle seat, and soon, Max got in, and Steve started the car.

The car ride was silent after Max explained where she wanted to go, Y/n's gaze fixated on the envelope that contained everything Max had to say to her. She didn't look up from it once, not until she felt the car come to a stop.

"All right, this better be fast, Mayfield," Steve spoke as he parked the car.

"Twenty seconds," Max replied, getting out of the car. Y/n watched nervously as she left, her eyes remaining glued to the door, waiting for her to come back out.

But she was taking a lot longer than twenty seconds. It had only been around three minutes, but it was a long time compared to the time Max told them she'd take. The boys and Y/n had exited the car, leaning against it as they waited for the redhead. Y/n sat on the hood, anxiously bouncing her foot. When her eyes caught sight of a recognizable head of hair, her eyes darted to her girlfriend, who was returning but was around the back of her trailer for some reason. She immediately noticed that something was wrong. Something happened.

"Max?"

Y/n's voice caught everyone else's attention, and Steve spoke next. "Hey, that was longer than twenty seconds," he pointed out, making Y/n lean forward and slap Steve's arm. "Shut up," she hissed before opening the door for her girlfriend. As the redhead got closer, Y/n saw tears trailing down her face and heard her broken breaths, hurting Y/n's heart. Steve saw it, too, realizing something was off. "Hey. Woah, woah, woah. You all right?" He asked, but Max didn't reply as she kept walking. "I'm fine, just drive," she told him as she made her way to Y/n and slid through the open door. Y/n got in after her, swiftly climbing over her girlfriend and landing in the middle, so Max wasn't stuck in the center seat. Max closed the door behind her Y/n as Steve started the car.

"Did something happen?" Dustin asked from the front passenger seat. Avoiding the question and wanting to leave, Max didn't give an answer. "Can we please just go?" She pressed, her voice wavering. The sound crushed Y/n more. Her least favorite sound on Earth was Max in any sort of distress.

Steve backed the car out of the driveway, and they left the neighborhood.

!!!

"Turn here."

Dustin looked back at her, seeming a mixture of shock and confusion. Y/n switched her gaze from her girlfriend to the front window, seeing that they were turning into a cemetery.
