Fifty-four: A Minor Misdemeanor

!!!

"Wait, what? Why me?"
"What?"  Max and Y/n spoke over each other.

"Follow me," Chief Powell ordered.

"I'm not even in the Hellfire Club!" Max tried, but Chief Powell wasn't leaving anything up for discussion. Callahan, on the other hand, used his power as much as he could. "Do I need to cuff you?"

"Cuff her!? That's bullshit! For what!?" Y/n protested, making Callahan raise his eyebrows at her and Max tap her side, trying to make her stop. Y/n heard her mother shout her name while the man's gaze moved to her. "You wanna get cuffed too?" Callahan asked, his tone condescending. Y/n furrowed her eyebrows. "Cuff either of us, see what happens."

"Is that a threat?" The man asked, his tone as annoying as always as Y/n's mother, Max, and Chief Powell tried to get her to stop snapping back. "And what if it was?" The girl asked, grinning amusedly as she tested her limits. Callahan exhaled a breathy chuckle, one that was supposed to look intimidating, but it just kind of looked stupid.

"Hey!" Powell's voice made Y/n look to him.

"Since you wanna argue, fine," he said. "You'll go first."

"I wanna go with her," Max said surely, her voice stern. Powell looked to her. "No."

"Then I'm not going,"  Y/n replied stubbornly.

Powell looked between the two, clearly agitated. He was silent for a moment before speaking. "Fine," he said through his teeth. "Both of you. Upstairs. Now."

Y/n looked to Max, a slight grin on her face as they both stood. Powell started upstairs, not turning to see if any of them were following. The girls did follow, Max bumping into Callahan's shoulder as she did, making Y/n smirk in amusement.

"Hey- that is very disrespectful!" He shouted, hurrying upstairs to catch up. Y/n let out a small chuckle, looking to Max who smiled back at her as they approached the top of the stairs.

!!!

"So, why don't you walk us through tonight?" Powell suggested. The four were in Mike's room as they were questioned, the Chief sitting on Mike's desk chair, Officer Callahan standing beside him, and the girls in his bed. Y/n glanced at her girlfriend before speaking. "Well, I ate dinner, then brushed my teeth, then showered..." Y/n started, lacking seriousness whatsoever. "Put on my pajamas, then mommy tucked me nice and cozy into bed and gave me a kiss goodnight," she told him sarcastically, Max chuckling as the man sighed.

"We told you everything," Y/n said, her joking manner coming to an end as she shook her head.

"Yeah," Max agreed. "We went for a night swim, then Nancy showed up, we realized it was the murder spot, so they dared me to say what I did, now we're here."

"Nancy just showed up?" Callahan asked. "Out of nowhere?"

"I mean, she probably followed us. She gets worried like that sometimes, you know?" Y/n lied, trying to stay calm. Her and Max had to try to escape the hole they dug themselves.

Well, that Dustin and Lucas dug them all.

"So no," Max said. "Not out of nowhere," she glared at Callahan, and Y/n snickered when the man seemed slightly intimidated.

"And when did she leave?" Powell asked them, ignoring the two's attitude.

"After we told her we were gonna go home," Y/n explained.

"Which we only said so he wouldn't bother us," Max added, and Y/n was extremely grateful it wasn't Dustin or Lucas being interrogated. She was worried about when they would be, though. They were going to screw it up, Y/n was sure. Her mind started to explore ways they could get out of Dustin and Lucas's turn.

!!!

Max pulled her headphones over her head as they all returned downstairs. Powell began talking to the parents, and Y/n's attention was pulled away from the music and onto Dustin when he silently waved them over.

"Max," Y/n nudged the redhead's arm, getting her attention.

The girls glanced behind them, making sure the adults weren't looking before following after their friend.

"What is it?" Y/n asked as they followed Dustin, Lucas and Erica upstairs. "You know you guys are gonna be questioned next, right? Here, you need to follow the story I'm gonna tell you, okay?"

"Y/n, listen," Lucas stopped her as Dustin closed the door behind them. They ended up in Nancy's room, a Lite Brite on the bed. "Eddie, Robin, Steve, and Nancy are in the Upside Down. They went through Watergate."

Y/n and Max raised their eyebrows, glancing to each other before looking back.

"What?" Y/n asked, incredulous. Why would they go through the gate? How did they manage to communicate?

"It's too much to explain, just follow us outside, grab a bike, and let's go," Dustin demanded, crossing the room to open the window. "Go! Come on!" He hurried, gesturing towards the window.

"You want us to jump out of a window? Are you crazy!?" Y/n shouted as quietly as possible.

"Come on!"

Y/n, although confused, approached the window, stepping out onto the roof. She carefully made her way over to the ledge before jumping off onto the grass. "Shit, shit, shit, shit!"

She rolled as she landed, quickly standing as the other joined.

The girl hurried to the garage to grab two bikes. She got on one, beckoning to the other as Max approached. The redhead hopped on the other use, and everyone else found a bike, Lucas having two.

"Hey!" Callahan's voice yelled from the open window, Y/n only sparing a glance as she pedaled faster.

"I guess it's just a minor misdemeanor," Erica knelt down next to a police car, stabbed a knife into the tire, then ran off and hopped onto the second bike Lucas had as the air hissed from the tire.

Y/n could hear each parent yelling their kids' names, the adults now outside as they watched their children hurry away.

"Sorry mom!"
