11. Twitch

I take a deep breath, then sit back on my heels. I stare at the girl's reflection, my heart scared as I try to figure out who she is.

Kid Ritz: "Are... are you..."

I stop as she stands up. She quietly walks in front of me, her pale, teal eyes scanning me over as she looks at me. I'm shocked by how pretty she is...

Girl: "How do you feel?"

Kid Ritz: "I... I feel alright. Did you save me?"

The girl looks at me nervously as she looks back at the water.

Girl: "Not... exactly."

Kid Ritz: "I was drowning in the river. I thought I died, but you pulled me out?"

Girl: "I did pull you out... but only because I saw you floating. I figured you were already dead, but your heart was still beating. I figured taking you out of the river would be worth something."

Kid Ritz: "Oh. Well, I'm very thankful you did. May I know your name?"

Girl: "Midori."

Kid Ritz: "Midori. That's a very pretty name. Thank you for helping me."

She nods as I cough.

Midori: "You sound dehydrated."

Kid Ritz: "I do?"

Midori: "You keep coughing, silly."

She giggles as I look at her, confused. Now that I'm really looking at her, she's not dressed normally. She's in a pretty teal tunic, and on her arms and feet are the tattoos that the man had.

Kid Ritz: "Midori... are... are you a Chaneque?"

Midori: "What's that?"

Kid Ritz: "A fairy."

Her eyes widen in surprise.

Midori: "I... I am. How did you know?"

I point to her arms.

Midori: "Oh, yeah. I forgot you Rageons don't have these. Or, well, you're not a Rageon. Look at your arms. Are you playing a trick on me?"

She asks me sweetly, yet my heart drops as I look at my arms. I see they're covered in indigo tattoos. I look at my feet and quickly pull off my socks to see that they are, in fact, covered in tattoos.

Kid Ritz: "No... no way."

I hurry to the river bank and peer into the water. I see that my eyes are glowing a deep indigo...

Holy shit...

Kid Ritz: "Midori... have you always been a fairy?"

Midori: "No. I was found here when I got separated from my friends on a hike through the forest. I wandered too far, got scared by a noise I heard, and fell into the river. I couldn't swim..."

Kid Ritz: "So... you drowned?"

Midori: "I thought I did. But I woke up on the river bank, and a man was with me. He's one of my friends now, but I believed he saved me."

Kid Ritz: "How long ago did this happen?"

Midori looks at the trees as she ponders.

Midori: "When was Applewood president?"

My heart drops as I realize who she's referring to.

Kid Ritz: "He... he died thirty years ago."

Midori: "Oh... then I guess I've been here a long time then, huh."
