I'm an idiot. A selfish, inconsiderate idiot. Ever since I got here, I've been putting all my thoughts and efforts into finding a way out. For me, and me alone. I've never thought about how to help Mila. The one who saved me from a horrible death, if not from a fate even worse than that.
Luca's words keep echoing in my head, reminding me that she could be facing a death sentence for what she did for me. It's not fair.
I hate what this world has become, and I hope with all of my being that there's still time for me to change the course of her fate, whichever horrible way it may go. If anything, she should be praised for her kindness, not punished.
I've nearly counted the minutes since Luca left, anxiously waiting for Bree to knock on the door around dinnertime. I've been having dinner in my room ever since I almost had a full on panic attack after listening in on a conversation between two of the guests. It still makes me sick to my stomach to think about how little they cared for human life.
When the sun has nearly disappeared behind the horizon, there's a short knock on my door.
I'm standing up before Bree's even halfway through the door frame.
"I need to see him", I say, not bothering with names or titles. Judging by the look on her face, she knows exactly who I'm talking about.
She puts down the plate of food on the bedside table and turns towards me. "Luca said you might say that."
"So, you'll take me?"
"Yes", she says, "but I want you to know there's no guarantee that it will go the way you want it to."
I nod. "I know, but I have to try." I'm well aware of the situation I'm facing, but I owe it to Mila to do everything in my power to undo the mess I've created.
"Okay then", Bree says. "I'm sure he'll be able to make some time for you."
With my heart starting to beat painfully hard in my chest, I follow behind Bree. I expect her to walk towards the office, but quickly realize she's heading another way. She stops by a door and knocks.
"Alpha, the human girl wants to see you."
I feel the blood rushing to my head, and nearly flinch as the door opens. Bree takes a step back, allowing me to enter. She bows down with her head before leaving, and I stare at the back of the door for a few moments before I dare turn around.
My eyes flicker over the room, and I nearly grimace in discomfort as I notice Bree's led me to his bedroom. I find Adrian leaning against the bedpost, and his eyebrows raise as our eyes meet.
"You wanted to see me?"
"I-I... uhm... yes", I stutter, trying to find the right words to say. "It's about Mila. The girl I stayed with before... this."
He's quiet for a while before he replies. "What about her?"
"I heard she's in trouble because of me and I want to help her."
Adrian scoffs. "That girl brought it upon herself. There's nothing you can do."
I do my best to keep the tears at bay. "But you can, can't you?"
For a slight second, there's a shimmer of amber in his eyes, disappearing as soon as he blinks. Desperate for him to hear my plea, I take a step forward, ignoring every logical bone in my body.
He gazes down at me. "I could, but I won't."
"Why not?" I question almost defensively. "She's there because of me. It's not right."
