Dear Readers,
I love Descendants, I really do, but even I can admit that the movies could have been so much better. I'm not saying that they should've aged it up, but children can definitely handle more serious situations. In this book, I wish to explore the world of Auradon more, with focus lying in Camelot Heights and Westerly. I also want to dig deeper in some side characters, like Lonnie, and perhaps add some side characters. However, through all this, I still want to keep the vibe of the movies, especially the color and friendship and fairytale feel that it has.
Now, having said this, I'm not restricting myself with the canon. I only know what's in the movies, and I will not torture myself with doing research on a kids move series. I know there's books and all but I really couldn't be bothered. I'll be changing some things, like the ages of the characters. Am I the only one who finds it weird that Ben became king at sixteen? While his dad is still alive? Why would the Beast give up the throne if he was still only in his forties/fifties and in good health? And give it to a sixteen year old? Make it make sense. Characters are now around eighteen, and in they're senior year, which still is way too young to be king. But it's better than sixteen. The first two movies will be in their senior year, and the third will be over the summer when they've graduated.
If you hadn't guessed, this is an Evie fic, because she deserved more screen time. I like Doug and Evie, but if it had been my choice I would've gone with Evie and Mal, for obvious reasons. Rewriting Mal and Ben's relationship would've been too much work, so I'm creating my own character.
Gwen is here to mostly be a challenge for me. Most of my characters so far have been either sarcastic, funny, flirty, or very bubbly. Gwen is the opposite of that. She's snarky, sure, but she keeps to herself and composes herself as a true knight. Evie is the one who is open and talkative, and that should make for a good dynamic if I do it right.
I haven't written anything concrete, but I've begun writing lore and history and am slowly creating an outline. I always say this and always break this rule, but I'm planning on not publishing anything until I've gotten a substantial amount written and then releasing it on a weekly or biweekly bases.
I really hope to create a fun, fairytale and light-hearted vibe in this book, while still holding onto the more serious undertones that come with royalty and politics!
See you there,
