The night air was thick with tension as Olivia led her team out of the command car. The creatures' inhuman shrieks echoed through the train yard, sending chills down their spines.

"Remember the plan," Olivia whispered. "Zoe, Eli – you two make a break for the locomotive. The rest of us will run interference."

Zoe clutched her toolkit, nodding nervously. Eli gave her a reassuring pat on the shoulder.

"On my mark," Olivia said, gripping one of Mia's homemade flares. "Three... two... one... Go!"

They burst out of the car, immediately scattering. Olivia sprinted towards the nearest creature, igniting the flare as she ran. The sudden burst of light sent the monster reeling, its unearthly scream piercing the night.

"That's right, you bastard," Olivia growled. "Come and get me!"

Across the yard, Max and Aiden tag-teamed another creature. Max jabbed with his makeshift spear, keeping it at bay while Aiden swung his crowbar in wide arcs.

"Is it just me," Max panted, "or are these things getting uglier?"

Aiden managed a grim chuckle. "Focus, man. We've got to keep them busy."

Meanwhile, Zoe and Eli darted between train cars, making their way towards the old locomotive. They could hear the creatures' howls behind them, spurring them to move faster.

"Almost there," Eli whispered encouragingly as they approached the massive engine.

Suddenly, a dark figure dropped from above, landing right in front of them. Its white eyes gleamed with malice, its razor-sharp claws reaching for them.

Zoe screamed, stumbling backward. Eli reacted on instinct, whipping out his slingshot and firing off his last LED flashlight. It struck the creature square in the face, causing it to shriek and claw at its eyes.

"Run!" Eli yelled, grabbing Zoe's hand and pulling her towards the locomotive.

Back near the command car, Mia and David stood guard over the still-recovering Liam. David hefted a heavy wrench, his eyes scanning the darkness.

"I don't like this," he muttered. "We're too exposed."

Mia nodded, clutching one of the remaining flares. "But we can't move Liam. We just have to hold out."

A blood-curdling screech made them both jump. One of the creatures was charging straight for them, moving faster than anything that size should be able to.

"Mia, now!" David shouted.

Mia ignited the flare, the bright light momentarily blinding them. The creature howled in pain, stumbling to a halt mere feet from them.

David didn't hesitate. He rushed forward, swinging the wrench with all his might. It connected with a sickening crunch, sending the monster sprawling.

"Nice hit, old man," Mia said, impressed.

David managed a wry smile. "Still got a few tricks up my sleeve."

At the locomotive, Zoe and Eli worked feverishly to rig up their makeshift lighthouse. Zoe's fingers flew over wires and connections while Eli kept watch.

"How much longer?" Eli asked nervously, eyeing the battles raging across the yard.

"Almost there," Zoe muttered, sweat beading on her forehead. "Just need to connect the power source and... got it!"

The locomotive's massive headlight flickered to life, casting a powerful beam across the train yard. Eli whooped in triumph.

"Now we just need to make it rotate," Zoe said, already moving to the next phase of their plan.

Across the yard, Olivia was in trouble. Her flare had burned out, and she found herself cornered by two of the creatures. She swung her barbed-wire bat desperately, but they were closing in fast.

"Olivia!" Max's voice rang out. He and Aiden were fighting their way towards her, but they wouldn't make it in time.

Just as one of the creatures lunged for her throat, a blinding light swept across them. The monsters shrieked in agony, recoiling from the beam.

"They did it!" Olivia gasped, realizing what had happened.

The locomotive's headlight began to rotate, sweeping across the train yard in regular intervals. Each time the light touched the creatures, they howled and retreated.

"Everyone, fall back to the command car!" Olivia ordered, seizing the opportunity.

As they regrouped, Zoe and Eli came running up, breathless but triumphant.

"It worked!" Zoe exclaimed. "We rigged it to an old motor. It should keep rotating all night!"

Olivia pulled them both into a quick hug. "You two are officially geniuses. How long will it last?"

Eli's face fell slightly. "That's the bad news. We had to use most of our remaining battery power. It'll last till dawn, maybe, but after that..."

They all knew what that meant. Come morning, they'd be defenseless again.

"Then we use this time wisely," Olivia decided. "Zoe, Eli – see if you can rig up some more permanent light defenses. The rest of us will take stock of our supplies and weapons. We need to be ready for tomorrow night."

As the team dispersed to their tasks, Olivia took a moment to catch her breath. She watched the rotating beam of light, keeping the creatures at bay just beyond the perimeter of Salvage Station 23.

Mia approached, handing Olivia a bottle of water. "Hell of a night, huh?"

Olivia nodded, taking a grateful sip. "You can say that again. Listen, Mia... those flares saved our lives. Why didn't you tell us about them before?"

Mia's eyes darkened. "Old habits, I guess. Before we found this place, keeping secrets was how we stayed alive. I'm... I'm still learning to trust."

Olivia placed a hand on her shoulder. "I get it. But we're stronger together. No more secrets, okay?"

Mia nodded, a small smile forming. "Okay. And for what it's worth... I'm glad we found this place. Found you all."

As dawn broke on the horizon, casting a pale light over the train yard, the locomotive's beam finally flickered and died. The creatures had retreated, for now, but Olivia knew they'd be back.

She gathered her tired, battered team around her. "We've made it through the night," she said, her voice filled with determination. "But our fight isn't over. Those things will be back, and we need to be ready. But look at what we accomplished tonight. Together, we're unstoppable."

As murmurs of agreement rose from the group, Olivia felt a surge of pride. They were more than just survivors now. They were a family, forged in the crucible of this new, terrifying world.

"All right, Salvage Station 23," she said, a fierce grin spreading across her face. "Let's get to work. We've got a home to defend."

As the team dispersed, each to their assigned tasks, a new sense of purpose filled the air. The night had been long and brutal, but they had survived. And with each challenge, they grew stronger.

Whatever horrors awaited them in the nights to come, Olivia knew one thing for certain: Salvage Station 23 would be ready.
