The pharmacy floor greeted them with an eerie stillness. Shadows stretched long and dark in the dim light filtering through dusty windows, transforming familiar objects into ominous silhouettes. The group moved cautiously, their footsteps muffled by the dust-covered floor.

Olivia's voice was barely above a whisper as she addressed the team. "Remember, we're looking for antibiotics, pain medication, and bandages primarily. Anything else is secondary. Stay in formation and watch each other's backs."

They worked quickly and efficiently, their movements practiced from countless supply runs. Olivia and Zoe vaulted over the counter, grabbing essential drugs and medical supplies. The others maintained a defensive formation, keeping watch for any signs of danger.

After several tense minutes, Olivia zipped up her backpack, now bulging with scavenged medications. "Good haul. Not everything we need, but enough to make a real difference. Let's move to the cafeteria. We could use some extra food supplies."

The group made their way through the eerily silent corridors, LED devices sweeping the shadows. The cafeteria doors loomed ahead, slightly open. Olivia held up a hand, signaling the team to stop.

"Aiden, David, secure the entrance. Max, Rosie, cover our backs. Zoe, you're with me. We'll grab what we can, fast and quiet."

They moved into position, and Olivia pushed the door open wider. The cafeteria was a mess of overturned tables and scattered chairs. Sunlight streamed through large windows, creating a stark contrast to the gloom of the corridors.

Olivia and Zoe darted between tables, stuffing their bags with any non-perishables they could find. The others kept vigilant watch, LED devices at the ready.

Suddenly, a high-pitched screech echoed through the room. Everyone froze.

"Screecher!" Rosie hissed, her eyes wide with alarm.

Before anyone could react, the cafeteria erupted into chaos. Jacks poured in from the darker corners and shadowed doorways, carefully avoiding the streams of sunlight from the windows. They skittered along the walls and under tables, their twisted forms barely visible in the gloom, glowing eyes and grotesque grins the only features clearly discernible.

"Circle up!" Olivia shouted, her voice steady despite the panic threatening to overwhelm them.

The team formed a tight circle, LED devices blazing outward. Jacks recoiled and smoked where the light touched them, retreating into the shadows only to emerge again when the beams moved past.

Rosie's eyes darted around the room, assessing their options. Her gaze settled on the large windows lining one wall of the cafeteria, streaming in bright sunlight that kept the Jacks at bay.

"The windows," she said urgently. "If we can break them, we might have a way out."

Olivia nodded, understanding immediately. "The sunlight will keep the Jacks back. We could climb down from there."

"We need to move!" Max yelled over the cacophony of inhuman screeches.

Olivia made a split-second decision. "New plan. Towards the windows. Go!"

They began to inch their way across the cafeteria, maintaining their tight formation. Jacks lunged from the darkness, clawing at the edges of their light, held at bay by mere inches. The creatures seemed to be growing bolder, their hunger driving them to risk brief exposures to the light in attempts to reach their prey.

In the chaos that followed, Zoe stumbled. She frantically fumbled with the controls on her LED device, trying to activate the powerful strobe function that had proven so effective against the Jacks in the past. But to her horror, the device failed to respond, its lights flickering weakly.

"No, no, no!" Zoe cried, her eyes widening as a Jack seized the opportunity, lunging towards her exposed back.

"Zoe!" Max shouted, surging forward. He gripped the spear in his hands, the flashlight attachment at the end blazing to life. With a practiced swing, he thrust the spear towards the oncoming Jack, the light searing its flesh and driving it back.

But as Max moved to protect Zoe, another Jack emerged from the shadows, its claws slashing towards his unguarded side. Max turned, but not quickly enough - the Jack's claws raked across his back, drawing a sharp cry of pain from him.

Rosie stepped in front of Zoe, her LED device blazing. "Max!" she cried, watching her friend stagger. But to her shock, the Jacks recoiled from her, as if an invisible barrier had sprung up around her.

"What-?" Zoe stared at Rosie, her eyes wide with disbelief.

Rosie spared her a brief glance. "I'll explain later. Get to the windows!"

Max, his back slashed and bleeding, gritted his teeth against the pain. "Rosie, how-?"

"Go, Max!" Rosie shouted, her attention focused on the Jacks that were now circling her, unable to touch her. "I've got this. Get the others to safety!"

Max hesitated for a moment, then nodded and rejoined the group as they surged towards the windows. Aiden and David began smashing the glass with chairs, their movements desperate and frantic. Olivia and Zoe provided cover, their LED devices sweeping the area for any approaching threats.

Rosie stood her ground, her small frame seemingly dwarfed by the horde of Jacks that surrounded her. But as they lunged, their claws found no purchase on her skin, as if an invisible force field protected her.

"What are you waiting for?" she yelled at the group. "Go!"

One by one, the others climbed through the shattered windows, their relief palpable despite the chaos still unfolding behind them. Rosie was the last to go, her eyes sweeping the cafeteria one final time before she turned and followed the others, disappearing from view.

As they reached the ground and sprinted for the relative safety of their nearby vehicle, Olivia's mind raced. They had escaped, against all odds, but the questions swirling in her mind were as numerous as the scars they would bear from this ordeal.

What was Rosie's secret? How had she been able to ward off the Jacks so effortlessly? And what other surprises might lie in store for them as they continued their desperate fight for survival?

One thing was clear: the group had grown stronger, and their bond had been forged in the crucible of this harrowing encounter. But the road ahead was long, and the challenges they would face were sure to be even greater.
