The festival had ended, leaving behind memories and a newfound connection between Daou and Offroad. Their truce held, but it was an uneasy peace, filled with unspoken words and hidden glances. As the days passed, the tension between them only grew, but it was no longer fueled by animosity alone.
Daou found himself in the library once more, attempting to concentrate on his studies. The peaceful atmosphere was disrupted by the arrival of Nari and Ken, who sat down across from him.
"You’ve been distracted again," Nari observed, her keen eyes not missing a thing. "Is it Offroad?"
Daou sighed, closing his book. "I don’t know what to make of him. One minute he’s infuriating, and the next…"
"He’s under your skin," Ken finished, leaning back in his chair. "Maybe it’s time to stop fighting it and figure out what you really feel."
Daou knew his friends were right, but admitting his feelings was another matter entirely. He decided to take a walk, hoping the fresh air would clear his mind. As he wandered through the school gardens, he was surprised to find Offroad sitting on a bench, deep in thought.
"Mind if I join you?" Daou asked, approaching cautiously.
Offroad looked up, a flicker of surprise crossing his face before he nodded. "Sure."
They sat in silence for a while, the sounds of nature providing a soothing backdrop. Finally, Daou spoke up. "I’ve been thinking about our truce."
Offroad turned to face him, curiosity in his eyes. "And?"
"And I think we need to talk," Daou admitted, struggling to find the right words. "About what’s really going on between us."
Offroad nodded slowly. "Yeah, I’ve been thinking about that too. It’s… confusing."
Daou took a deep breath, deciding to be honest. "I’ve spent so much time trying to be perfect, to live up to everyone’s expectations. And then you come along, challenging everything, and I don’t know how to handle it."
Offroad smiled softly. "I guess I’ve always been a bit of a rebel. But it’s not just about challenging you. There’s something about you that I can’t ignore."
Daou felt a surge of relief at Offroad’s words. "I feel the same way. It’s like you see through all the walls I’ve built."
Their conversation was interrupted by the sudden appearance of Pim and Mint, who had been searching for Offroad. Pim’s eyes widened in surprise when she saw them together. "Am I interrupting something?"
Offroad shook his head, though a hint of a smile played on his lips. "No, we were just talking."
Mint grinned. "Well, don’t let us stop you. We were just heading to the café. Want to join us?"
Daou and Offroad exchanged a glance before nodding. "Sure," Daou agreed, standing up. "Let’s go."
As they walked to the café, Daou felt a sense of contentment. The conversation with Offroad had opened a door, and he was ready to explore what lay beyond it. The café was bustling with students, but they managed to find a quiet corner to sit and chat.
Pim and Mint kept the conversation light, talking about upcoming events and school gossip. Daou and Offroad exchanged occasional glances, a silent understanding passing between them. When Pim and Mint left to get more drinks, Daou took the opportunity to speak privately.
"I meant what I said earlier," Daou began, looking directly at Offroad. "I want to figure this out, whatever it is between us."
Offroad nodded, his expression serious. "Me too. But it’s not going to be easy."
Daou smiled. "I think we can handle it. We’ve already survived worse."
Offroad laughed softly. "True. And maybe, just maybe, we’re better together than apart."
As they sat there, the noise of the café fading into the background, Daou felt a sense of hope. The journey ahead was uncertain, but for the first time, he felt ready to face it. With Offroad by his side, he knew they could navigate the uncharted waters together, discovering the depths of their connection and the strength of their bond.
