The morning sun cast long, twisted shadows across the courtyard of Nevermore Academy, an unwelcome brightness piercing the otherwise somber setting. Wednesday Addams stood motionless, a statue carved in alabaster, her black dress absorbing the light and refusing to give it back. Beside her, Pugsley shifted his weight from one foot to the other, his expression a mixture of impatience and unease.
A faint rumble in the distance heralded the arrival of their parents. The familiar silhouette of the Addams family car, a dark and looming presence, emerged from the forest road. As it approached, the iron gates of Nevermore groaned open, granting passage to the malevolent vehicle. Lurch, their towering and impassive chauffeur, guided the car with the grace of a hearse gliding into a graveyard.
Pugsley's fingers twitched at his sides, a nervous habit Wednesday had long since noted but never commented on. She turned her head slightly, her cold gaze meeting his. "Nervous, brother?"
Pugsley shrugged, then winced. "A little."
"Patience, Pugsley," Wednesday replied, her voice a calm monotone. "Anticipation sharpens the mind. Or did you forget already?"
The car came to a halt, the engine's growl subsiding into an eerie silence. The doors opened simultaneously, releasing Gomez and Morticia Addams into the courtyard. Morticia, a vision of gothic elegance, floated towards them with an ethereal grace. Gomez, with his ever-present cigar and mischievous grin, was a stark contrast to her serene demeanor.
"Pugsley, my boy!" Gomez's voice boomed, echoing off the ancient stones of Nevermore. He enveloped his son in a hearty embrace, clapping him on the back with such vigor that Pugsley stumbled forward.
"Dad," Pugsley greeted, his voice strained but affectionate. Morticia followed, her dark eyes scanning her children with maternal pride.
"Wednesday, darling," Morticia murmured, her voice as smooth as silk. She reached out, her cold fingers brushing Wednesday's cheek. "How is Jericho treating you?"
"Like a crypt," Wednesday replied, her tone devoid of warmth. "Exactly as I prefer."
Gomez turned his attention to Pugsley, a flicker of concern crossing his features. "How's the shoulder, son?"
Pugsley opened his mouth to respond, but Wednesday's hand shot out, her fingers pressing into his shoulder with precise and deliberate pressure. He flinched, a sharp intake of breath betraying his discomfort.
"Still tender," Wednesday observed, her voice as clinical as a surgeon's. Gomez laughed, a deep, hearty sound that resonated with genuine amusement.
"That's my haunting little melody," he chuckled, ruffling Pugsley's hair affectionately, surveying Wednesday with loving eyes. "Always keeping us on our toes."
They began to walk towards the quad, the cobblestones beneath their feet worn and uneven. Gomez and Morticia engaged Pugsley in conversation, their voices a soothing hum of familial affection. Wednesday lagged behind, her pace deliberate and measured. She watched the interplay with detached interest, her mind cataloging every detail.
Ever the doting father, Gomez walked his arm around Pugsley's shoulder, which was a little more difficult now that the younger man was almost a foot taller. "How has the year been? Filling in my footsteps, I hope?"
Pugsley grinned, his earlier discomfort forgotten. "Absolutely, Dad! I start wrestling and fencing again next week, in time to collect another title!"
Gomez's laughter boomed again, drawing the attention of even more students. "That's the spirit!"
In the conversation with her family, Gomez started to recount tales of his own school days, each story more fantastical and improbable than the last. Morticia listened with a serene smile, her hand resting lightly on Gomez's arm. Pugsley's laughter, genuine and unguarded, punctuated the narrative.
