Chapter 1

Black Sky and Black Ship

I was sitting calmly, feeling cool, free, fresh, and lonely on the capstan, my mind drifting back to the past. My past was a time when I lived with my family, happy and without any risks. Then my life changed. I became needed, perhaps more than ever, but I paid a high cost. I lost the help of others, just like many others do, but I blackened my own face and left them forever. I left my home, my city, and eventually my land. My journey led me to the city harbor, where I met the ship captain, Nathaniel Reed.

"It means you are Blake?" Captain Nathaniel Reed asked.

"Sir, my name is Ethan Blake," I told him my name again.

"But you are a white man; who would call you black?" Captain Nathaniel Reed replied. I thought the captain might be mad or crazy because he was laughing after he finished speaking.

"You need work," he suddenly stopped in the middle of his laugh. "I will give you all you need. Why did God make me if not for this?" He laughed again. I wanted to thank him, but he left. His officer came forward and took me to his office. With my head down, I followed quickly, like dust carried by a fast wind.

Chapter 2

Introduction of Shipmates

Before I tell you more about the story, I would like to introduce our shipmates. You already know my name is Ethan Blake and how I came to work on the ship. Once the ship's work was completed and the black ship was leaving port, Captain Nathaniel Reed offered me a one-year contract. He told me that we would return to our city port after one year, and then I could go home with money. The offer was great for me, so I accepted it. My responsibility was very simple: I was the supervisor of the laborers, overseeing the loading and unloading of ship cargo at ports.

The second-in-command of our ship was Captain Nathaniel Reed. He was crazy and mad in his behavior, but he was also a genius, clever, and cruel. I discovered all this afterward. Julian Hawk was Captain Nathaniel Reed's personal officer, but I felt he was more like the ship's guard because he often trained the laborers and workers to fight. Gabriel Thornton served as the outside officer; he made plans and maps for outside ports where we could go for business. Liam Mercer was our ship engineer. He maintained the ship for travel. He was a master of his art. I saw him at work all the time; he worked as quickly as if he were running.

Chapter 3

We Were Pirates

As we ventured into deeper ports far from land, the ship's environment gradually changed. I felt as if the true nature of my shipmates was emerging from behind a façade. We shifted our business away from loading cargo. When we reached a port, most of the men and women waiting for us were under the guard of heavy and strong men. They were handed over to Captain Nathaniel Reed in exchange for a large sum of money. It didn't take a child to understand that these people were being bought as slaves and would be sold in distant places. I was terrified, and my face turned pale.

Anna Fisher saw my expression and laughed. I had once thought of her as a kind woman, but now she seemed like the sea's evil incarnate. Julian Hawk placed a heavy hand on my shoulder and laughed along with Anna Fisher. Captain Nathaniel Reed watched the situation with great interest before approaching me. He said that these people wanted to cross the border and that he was just helping them for a fee, which wasn't too high. Captain Nathaniel Reed then seemed to become wary of me and asked, "You don't think we are pirates, do you? We are all noble. You can ask Anna and Emily; they know I am a good man."

Chapter 4

My Fight with the Captain

Their behavior seemed to worsen day by day. Sometimes, one of them would push me away and laugh, and other times they would deliberately sabotage my work. I was holding in my anger, but one day I finally burst. Anna Fisher, as I told you before, was a short woman with a devilish nature. She came with a glass of rum for Captain Nathaniel Reed, and as a joke, she poured the rum over me. Soaked, I grabbed her arm and demanded to know what she had done.
