Do the difficult things while they are easy and do the great things while they are small. A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step - Lao Tzu
I stayed in the hospital for 2 days as I had to stay for some more tests and the fact that they're actually gonna do the experiment here at the hospital. When day 2 came, it was time to start the process. They had a room big enough for cases like this. I was a nervous wreck. My leg was bouncing, my hands were shaking, and I kept on biting my lower lip. I felt someone sit down next to me, but I didn't know who.
"Nervous?"
I knew who that was. Jake.
"Can you blame me? In a few minutes you're all about to see what I've been seeing for a few months now."
"I can't relate what you're going through, but I can be there for you."
"Promise you won't leave?"
"I promise."
Jake kissed my cheek gently while whispering in my ear.
"Everything is gonna be fine. You're gonna get through this, just like you always do. Because you, South Diamond, are a fighter. I love you so much."
"I love you, too."
"Miss Diamond? It's time."
Laura soon came in along with 2 detectives, my dad and Claire. It wasn't long until I had patches on my head and I saw my readings on a monitor.
"So, this line changes color depending on how stable your dreams are."
"Define 'stable'." Michael said.
"When the line turns green, it means South's dreams are calm, attainable and steady. Yellow means it's picking up the pace. You may start to have muscle spasms and your dreams may feel more real. Meaning that you might actually feel physical touch or even smell a few things in the unconscious. And when you wake up, you'll be able to describe those smells and touches."
"And what does red mean?" South asked.
"It...means your dreams are more vivid and violent. But don't worry about that."
"Why would I worry?"
"No one's dreams have ever gotten that far, so you should be fine."
"Don't sugar coat it, what happens if the line goes red?"
Laura stayed quiet for some time until she finally spoke.
"Red means your dreams are more real. You may start to thrash around, scream, sweat, and your heart rate will go up."
"What happens when it gets to that part?" Jake asked.
"Your brain won't be able to process that much violence. If it gets to that point, we..."
We all looked at Laura.
"We might not be able to wake you up. You could be sucked into your dream. So you wouldn't just be having a dream, you'd be actually living in your dream."
"And there's no way to wake her up?" Claire asked.
"If it gets to that point, only South can wake herself up."
"And how do I do that?"
"It all depends on what you see. You need to come to terms with the circumstances and wake yourself up. Basically, you'll need to face your fears. Confront your demons. But like I said, no one has ever gotten that far."
I laid back as I let them do their job and my nerves weren't slowing down. I felt Jake squeeze my hand and it made me a bit more calm. The doctors gave me something to take, which was supposed to make me tired.
"Now, South. I want you to slowly count to 10."
"1...2...3...4...5..."
I felt it working. I felt my eyes slowly getting heavy, and I slowly felt myself fall into a deep slumber.
