I arrived at my mothers birthday party, lights flickering around my old family home, with music so loud it could be heard a few towns away. I took a look through the window to see my relatives and friends young and old dancing, socializing and playing Red Moon festival games. I shook my head bracing myself for a barrage of hugs, she just had to make it extravagant. Thats my mother for you. Attention, attention, attention. There wasn't one day I could remember where the spot light wasn't on her at all times. I got out of my car door walking towards the door ringing the door bell.

The front door swung open revealing a tall man with dark brown hair and light brown eyes. His voice boomed as he spoke, slurring at his words.

"Emilie! My beautiful girl! How have you been?" My Dad yelled clearly a little merry from the Moon Punch, he went in for a hug, and long one too using almost all his strength on it.

"Hey Dad." I laughed. "How much Moon Punch did you drink?"

"Come now Lili." My Dad pouted, " You don't think I can handle my alcohol? I've been drinking a lot longer than you have, plus, it's my two favorite girls day, can I not celebrate?"

I rolled my eyes. "Dad, maybe you should drink more water?"

I smiled looking around the room seeing all my favourite cousins. My smile faded as I remembered my Mother would also be here too.

"Where is Mum?"

"Your Mum is in the living room talking to your cousins! Come! Come!" My father grinned.

I was ushered into the family room, my heart raced as I looked upon the face of the woman who made me. My Mother smiled up at me, a smile that was bright and warm, a smile the incorrectly described a woman that was not, for I knew it was fake. I returned the fake smile and sat down on the sofa next to my mother, who was receiving hugs and kisses from all of my friends and family congratulating her for all her accomplishments, wishing her a Happy Birthday and Red Moon Day.

"I haven't seen you in a while!"

"Nice to see you Lili!"

"You should get out of the house often, you're such a hermit!"

I hugged and kissed those who spoke, having small talk with them before my Mother reached over to hug and kiss my cheek.

"Happy Birthday Emilie."

"Happy Birthday Mum."

I quickly averted my eyes, looking anywhere but my Mother, but from the corner of my eye, I could see she looked as if she wanted to tell me something. I did not care, in fact, I wasn't interested and she knew. She then cut into the conversion I was having with one of my cousins, placing a small grip  on my shoulder.

"Can I borrow her for a moment, I just would like to talk to my daughter for a little while." My mother smiled again.

I cut my Mother a blank look.

'What does she want?!'

I hugged my cousins getting up from the sofa waving them goodbye. I started walking towards the back garden, taking a small walk towards a small secluded area. She placed her hand on my back to try and worm herself in for a hug. I backed away, keeping my distance. Hurt flashed through my Mother's eyes but she kept her composure trying to make small talk with me.

"So, how have you been angel?"

"Good" I replied bitterly.

"I love what you've done with your hair. You seem well"

"You too."

"Anything good happen today? Anything fun?"

"No"

My Mom frowned her eyes lowering to the ground as she started to speak.

"Why do you have to be so short with me Em? We used to be best friends you and I"

I nodded, a small laugh leaving my lips. "That's true, although, you have to remember that was before you had slept with my fiancé." I stated frankly. "What was the excuse you had given me when I had found you in my home? Naked? In my own bed?.."

"Listen Lili-

"Oh save it" I snapped.

"Look, you're a beautiful girl, it's not like you cant just get a new man if you wanted? Besides, Steve wasn't even right for you. He was always looking at other girls, texting them!.." She stood proud in her words, holding her purse in her hands "I saved you from a miserable marriage. If it weren't for me, you should have been married to a man who couldn't even tie his own shoe laces together"

"That still didn't stop you from sleeping with him?!"I saw red. "Also What do you know about a happy marriage? Saved me from a miserable marriage did you? Well, maybe I should do my Father a favour and save him from being miserable in yours?"

"How dare you-

"Lili?" came a sing song like voice "There you are!"

I turned my head to see who the voice belonged to.

"Christie?"

"I was looking all over for you! I thought you were here an hour ago." Christie took my hand leading me away from my Mum "Can I take her from you Mrs. BlaQue?"

My Mother nodded blurting something like 'sure' holding her necklace. She began playing with the locket that held a picture of our family. She then turned her back to us quickly walking away from the garden and into the party blending in.

We walked towards the garden gate with Christie swinging it open, she pulled me through it leading to another part of the garden.

"I saw what was happening..." Christie kissing my forehead, she stroked my arm as she spoke again. "Sorry, but I just had to get you out of there..."

"No No, I thank you. I was about to kill my mum truth be told."

"No because I would have too! Like That was the most Narcissistic evil thing a mother could ever say to their child 'I saved you from a miserable marriage' is crazy! Who does she think she is?"

I pulled away from her arms slumping down on a near by bench, the sun still high in the sky. I wiped my face to see tears covering my cheeks.

"No don't cry Lili" Christie begged. "I hate to see you cry, what do you need from me? I'll go do it, hey I know, cake, everyone loves cake, I'll get you cake!" With that Christie ran off into the house before I could say anything to stop her, I laughed watching her scramble the house for me something to eat.

Looking down into my hands, I thought of old memories containing Steve, and it disgusted me. To think I spent so much time trying to build a connection with him, help him through his traumas, payed for his things, was there for him since he lost his job and helped him get a new one, all that on a man who couldn't even be loyal to me is insane. What a waste of a year and five months.

I got up from the bench looking towards the party, Christie's ADHD got the better of her as she was now conversating with my family, chatting it up with friends and having an all around amazing time. A warm feeling filled my chest as I watched her but was quickly filled with dread as I watched my mom walk into the window frame. Disgust, pure utter hatred filled me as I then turned on my heels and walked towards the back entrance outside.

I wanted to go home, I didn't want to stay another minute here.
