"Do you two.. Know.. Each other?.." Leena asked with a puzzled face, pointing and looking at the both of them.
They just kind of sat with awkward tension lingering in the air, until Walker broke it.
"I saw her at the beach this morning"
Leena looked at him and saw almost a spark in his eye, so she quickly smirked and looked back. This is how it always began after all.
"Okay, well anyways..." She went on to order a couple of croissants and a latte for herself. Walker just stood there beside her, watching the girl who he came to know as 'Thea' (he read her name tag). She definitely pegged him as the photographer type. A knack of observation for everything around her. She glanced at him while she was packaging their order and almost let out a giggle seeing him just stand there.
"That should be everything. Did you guys want anything else?" She smiled and offered them all. Tanner was eyeing the cupcakes in the window but Leena gave him a glare. "We're good, but thank you so much, and hey, maybe we'll see you around! We're here for the entire summer after all." She was definitely setting something up for later on.
Thea nodded, "I hope so! You guys are super nice, thanks for stopping by!" And she was definitely looking at Walker for that last part, who had started to shoo Tanner off when he started to try and take the croissants from the bag. She thought of it to be nice to be a middle child in that sense.
Walker and his siblings walked out with the ring of the door bell, but not before Walker glanced back at the Thea who started to clean and prep for more baking. He turned and let the door close, immediately getting hammered by Leena's remarks. She nagged on him for 'meeting a girl who was so pretty and not telling her', but he just brushed her off, saying, "She's just a girl I bumped into again. Nothing out of the ordinary, especially for here."
Meanwhile, Thea started to bake some raspberry tarts and thought about the interaction.
You know that saying that goes something like, "You never meet someone just once, you'll always meet them again." Or something like that? That was all she thought about. What a funny coincidence that she saw the same guy- and in the same day too! Maia would definitely be getting an earful after her shift was done, and that would only be on the call before she got to her house.
Tanner was messing with some random shelf toys from the gift shop with Walker. They were waiting for Leena to get one of those overpriced t-shirts that kept these shops going."Look, what if I told you that this shark could totally be from a river in Ohio. That's not even it though. Do you see the cheeks on this thing?? Biggest gyatt I've seen in my life." That was the worst thing to come out of Tanners mouth today. Walker cut off the urge of smacking him in the head and just sighed. If only he had recorded it for future blackmail. Leena came back with her shirt and a couple of bracelets for each of them. A special grate from her.
They all decided to take a walk down the beach when they got back, because what else were they supposed to do, so they made their way down the boardwalk and onto the warm sands with the shoreline ahead. They passed by the spot where Walker first noticed Thea on the dunes. Why was he thinking about her?? He remembered what Leena had said about her fling and wanted to dig deeper, since time had passed of course.
"Remember last night when you talked about that.." He whispered to Leena so Tanner wouldn't hear,
"...Summer fling?"
She turned to face him and grinned, "Why, got your mind set on yours for now?" Walker just groaned and rolled his eyes. She was always teasing him and at this point, he would rather have her look like Wybie from Coraline with that sewed mouth than hear her teases again."No. I'm talking about you. What happened with you and that guy, and who was he anyways?" Her expression darkened when I asked that, but she let out a shaky breath and answered.
"When I was your age, the last time we came here, I met this guy named Miles. He was the sweetest guy I could ever dream up and even now I don't know if I could find someone better." Her skin started forming goosebumps.
"But reality came in and we got into this super bad argument at a party on what we would do after the summer. I told him I had to go home and he just lost it. We both went home in tears. Huge scene. I never got to tell him how much he meant to me before he moved from here."
That was a load to unpack for him, but really, it made sense. She hadn't been able to stomach a relationship at all when we were back home, and if she tried one here it would just be worse. That made him kind of, well what's the word. Perplexed? He wasn't sure what to make of summer flings because the way he saw it in Leena, she loved the fun of it, but the ending was always bad. He def died right then and there that he'd try not to get into one for the entire summer.
Leena patted Walker on the arm and gave him a small smile.
"Don't worry though. I'm sure if you find a girl to snooch on all summer, she'll be the one who understands the change." And that was all he needed to hear.
Thea immediately called Maia after work and mentioned every single detail about her encounter with beach boy that day. How he kept watching her every move, and the glance back at her from the door. It was the epitome of classic cases.
"Well, do you think he's cute?" Maia asked as soon as Thea parked her car in-front of her house. Maia was at the door waiting for her so she could let her in.
"I mean, I guess so. He is my type. But seriously, a guy that I spoke about three sentences too? You're delusional." Thea took off her shoes and they walked up to Maias room, shouting a hello to her mom beforehand.
"If I'm delusional then you need to be thrown in an asylum for all the bat shit crazy stuff you do." Maia remarked, plopping down on her bed, "Is he from here?"
"I don't think so, but his I assume sister said that they'd be staying for the summer. But it's be really funny if you ran into them with me." Maia knew where this was headed. "There's gonna be a party down the road right? The house on the beach? $20 says they'll be there."
"You mean the party that has me and the band playing for?? I hope not."
For context, Thea in the 7th grade performed at a talent show. She had always loved to sing and wanted to share that with the people around her, so she performed a song on stage. Some of the kids who had started a band were looking for a singer, and she was asked to join. They played for anyone that really asked around the town, but also got reservations at restaurants sometimes.
"Oh come on, they'll love you even more knowing what you have stored in that big voice box of yours."
"It's not like I care anyways!" Thea threw herself on the bed, "He's a guy I saw this morning who's only gonna be here for the summer. Now, you think you're gonna find a man to party with tonight? I'll keep my eyes peeled from the stageee~" Maia smacked a pillow onto Theas face with a thump, causing the rest of her body to jolt for a brief moment.
"I don't think so, and even if I did, I'm leaving soon anyways. I can't just get a guy and drop him if he's not staying- ohhh." Maia finally saw her words contradicting themselves.
Thea forced herself up and out from the pillow, "Now you get me. Oh! Do you have plans on what you're bringing to the school?"
She didn't really wanna ask because with every word coming out about the school, her stomach dropped a little more, but it's what Maia wanted and Thea would do anything for her. Even if it meant getting the guy.
