Burying the old man was probably the hardest thing I've ever done. He used to take me on adventures all the time.
(Flashback)
We often spent winter in a family cabin.
Dad: Come on, son. We need to find firewood.
Young Jon: My feet hurt.
He always gave me a gentle nudge to keep me going.
Dad: Hey, you're a Frost. We don't quit. I know you can do this.
Young Jon: *smiles* You're right. Let's get this wood.
Dad: Attaboy.
After winter, he'd take us to our house in the small town of Hell, Michigan. (It's a real place; look it up.) He was the nicest guy and did a lot for that community, but he also knew how to catch you in a lie. Like when he caught me sneaking out.
Dad: Where are you going?
Teen Jon: Uh, to a friend's house.
He would observe every movement and every tell you gave away.
Dad: Don't lie, Jon. Where are you really going?
Teen Jon: *sigh* To a bonfire with my friends.
He also told me stories about his time as a US Marine and how he made a deal with General Louis Cypher to end the war.
(Present)
After the funeral, I received something in the mail.
I checked and found a note from my dad:
"Dear Jon,
If you're reading this, I'm no longer with you. I want you to know how much I love you.
I have a task for you. Go to the old abandoned house on the edge of town. Find a spot there and draw a simple symbol on the ground. This is something important to me.
Take care of yourself and remember that I love you always.
Love,
Dad"I flipped the paper to see the symbol.
Jon: I'll do it, Dad. For you.
(In Hell)
(??? POV)
My receptionist whispered to me.
???: So Arin's dead?
I walked to the window and looked out at the city.
???: Gonna miss that son of a bitch. Now I hope he kept his end of the deal.
(Back on Earth)
(Jon POV)
I trek to the building and check it to make sure. A few homeless people are hanging out inside.
Jon: Alright.
