The next day
----------------------------------------A/N: I didn't write the whole chapter one one sitting, so some small things can be inconsistent. I hope that's not the case, but apologise in advance.
We walk through the forest towards the town John was talking about. Max walks with us from time to time, catching some twigs lying on the ground and running with them to us so that we can play with him. Ben leads Willow on a leash, while Ashley and Beth sit on her. We agreed that the people sitting on the horse would change every few minutes. In a few minutes it'll be Mike's and mine's turn.
We don't have masks on yet. There are no hordes nearby and individual walkers can be easily killed.
Along the way, John explains to us what we will do once we get there. Me, Mike, Ashley, Beth and Owen will stay with Willow and Max in a house outside the city. Willow would be afraid of walkers and Max would shoulder at them. Someone has to keep an eye on them, but all adults are needed in the city just in case. It seems the mask training was for nothing, at least for now.
Richard didn't really like the idea of leaving the kids alone, but he didn't want to endanger us in the city even more.
Mike still had his UNO with him, so we wouldn't get bored.
----------------------------------------
We had already reached the suburbs, now we had to look for a place to stay with Willow and Max. We chose a small house with barricaded windows. In case someone could still see us through the planks on the windows, we hid in a room on the second floor without any windows. It was quite dark in here, but Ben found some old candle for us. It would burn for only a few hours, but it's better than nothing.
The room looks like some bathroom. There is a bath, a shower, washing machine and a sink with a mirror. There was also a small carpet on the floor.
Keeping a horse in a small, crowded room doesn't seem like a smart idea, but Willow is a smart and gentle horse, so she shouldn't be a problem. She is also tired from all the walking. Even Max, usually full of energy, is tired, and he didn't have two kids on his back the whole walk.Richard: Alright, the candle isn't going to give you much light and it will propably go out in about 3 hours, less if Max or Willow touch it, but you should be okay. We will try to get the supplies as fast as we can. Stay here and don't make any noise. If you HAVE TO leave the room, wear your masks.
Kids: Okay
Ashley: Be careful.
Richard: Of course.
Richard left and closed the door and damn, it's dark in here, even with the candle.
Mike: Sooo... anyone wanna play some UNO?
Beth: Yeah, but you will have to teach me how to play.
Mike: No problem.

Richard's POV
We left the kids in the house and went to the city with our masks on. I feel bad for leaving them in a small, dark room, but it's safer than going into a horde. At least I hope it is.
A/N: There is a lot of whispering in this chapter, so from now on character whispering will be represented by * next to their name.
John*: Okay, I was here a few years ago, I remember some of the city. There should be a grocery store nearby.
John leads us to a street full of walkers. On the other side of the street, like he said, there is a grocery store. We slowly make our way through the horde. The store doesn't have broken windows, which is good, because that would mean someone was there, since walkers can't brake windows. At least from I've seen. The door are also untouched, but they are open. That could mean either people were here or someone left it open when the apocalypse started. Fortunately, it looked to be the latter, because the bottom of the door was already covered with moss from the sidewalk.
