The next few days passed in a whirlwind of familiar faces and warm welcomes. Mia reveled in the comfort of her childhood home and the laughter she shared with Jake and Liam. It felt like she had never left, yet everything was also tinged with a sense of novelty.
That Saturday, Jake decided to host a game night for their close friends. As Mia helped prepare snacks in the kitchen, she could hear laughter and chatter from the living room. She felt a warm glow of excitement; she had missed this—being surrounded by friends, the camaraderie, and the lighthearted teasing.
"Everything looks great, Mia!" Liam called from the living room, his voice bright and cheerful. She could see him lounging on the couch, a half-eaten slice of pizza in one hand, his signature grin plastered across his face.
"Thanks! I hope everyone likes the nachos!" she replied, trying to sound confident.
"You could put cardboard out there, and they'd still love it," he quipped, winking at her. "But I think you'll be just fine."
Mia's heart skipped at his playful tone, and she couldn't help but smile back. Liam had always had a way of making her feel special, and she had forgotten how much she missed their banter.
As friends began to trickle in, the living room filled with excitement. Mia found herself engaged in light conversation with everyone, but her attention kept drifting back to Liam. He was effortlessly charming, flirting with their friends while stealing glances at her, making her stomach flutter.
"Hey, Mia!" Emma, her new friend from school, arrived and joined her at the snack table. "I can't believe how many people came! This is awesome!"
"Yeah, it feels good to be back," Mia replied, glancing at Liam, who was now showing off his game skills. "Everyone seems to be in high spirits."
"Especially Liam," Emma noted, smirking knowingly. "He's definitely got his eye on you."
Mia's cheeks flushed. "What do you mean?"
"Come on! The way he looks at you when he thinks no one's watching? He's totally into you." Emma nudged her playfully.
Mia shook her head, trying to dismiss the thought. "He's just being friendly."
"Friendly? That's not friendly, girl. That's a full-on flirt." Emma grinned. "You should flirt back! It could be fun!"
Mia bit her lip, unsure. Could she really go down that road? Especially with Jake being so protective? But there was something undeniably enticing about the idea.
As the night wore on, the games began, and Mia found herself seated next to Liam on the couch. Their shoulders brushed, and her heart raced at the proximity. He leaned closer, his voice low as he whispered, "So, what's the deal with your photography? I've seen some of your stuff online, and it's impressive."
"Thanks! I've been trying to improve my skills," she replied, feeling a rush of warmth at his genuine compliment. "I really love capturing moments—especially candid ones."
"Maybe you can take some shots of me in action tonight. I'm a natural," he joked, flexing his arm playfully.
Mia laughed, feeling more at ease. "Oh, I'm sure you'd just strike a pose."
"Hey, I'm a model at heart," he declared, grinning widely. "The world just hasn't recognized my talent yet."
Mia rolled her eyes, fighting back a smile. "Right, let's not get ahead of ourselves."
As the game progressed, Liam's flirtation grew bolder. He playfully challenged her, leaning in closer each time, their laughter mingling with the sounds of their friends. She found herself leaning into the moment, enjoying the thrill of his attention.
When it was her turn to play, she felt his eyes on her, and the warmth of his gaze sent her heart racing. He cheered her on, adding silly comments that made everyone laugh, but what stood out most was how he made her feel special amid the crowd.
After a particularly intense round of charades, Mia caught Liam staring at her with a playful glint in his eyes. "You know, if I didn't know any better, I'd say you were trying to impress me," he said, his voice teasing yet sincere.
She met his gaze, her cheeks flushed. "Maybe I am. Or maybe I just want to show you that I'm not the little girl you used to tease."
"Trust me, I noticed," he replied, leaning in closer. "You've definitely grown up."
Their eyes locked, and Mia felt a spark of electricity between them. Just as she was about to respond, Jake appeared, interrupting the moment. "Hey, you two! Are you going to join us, or just sit there flirting all night?"
Mia quickly broke eye contact, a wave of embarrassment washing over her. "We were just talking about the game!" she said, trying to sound casual.
Jake raised an eyebrow, a knowing look crossing his face, but he didn't press further. Instead, he launched back into the game, and Mia could feel Liam's gaze on her, lingering and intense.
As the night wore on and the laughter echoed in the room, Mia couldn't shake the feeling that something was changing between her and Liam. She was drawn to him in a way she hadn't anticipated, and while the thought excited her, it also filled her with trepidation.
She would have to tread carefully. After all, she didn't want to ruin the bond between Jake and Liam. But as she caught Liam's eye again, she couldn't help but wonder if perhaps it was worth the risk.
