Five years later....
Arush's POV :
"What did you do at school today?" I ask my son, Agastya, as he grins up at me. Without a word, he wraps his little arms tightly around my leg, hugging me with all his might. My heart feels like it's going to burst. He's so damn adorable, and every time I look at him, I'm reminded of his mother. The same bright eyes, the same mischievous smile.
"I played with my friends," he replies with enthusiasm. "And I saw Ahana at recess."
"Yeah?" I murmur as we stand by the school gate, waiting for Ahana. "Was she scared? It was her first day today, so you looked after your baby sister, right?"
Agastya bursts out laughing and shakes his head, his curls bouncing with every movement. "Ahana? Scared? Come on, Dad. She's never scared!"
I suppress a smile. He's right, of course. Ahana, only four years old, is fearless. She's got Sara's fierce temperament and boundless intelligence. Watching my wife deal with her mini-me is always the highlight of my day.
"Papa!"
My heart swells every time I hear her call me that. I bend down just in time to catch Ahana as she runs full speed into my arms, leaping into the air without a second thought. Her tiny arms circle my neck, and I can't help but kiss her soft, rosy cheek. Today, like every day, she's dressed head-to-toe in pink-pink dress, pink shoes, and even a little pink hairband.
It cracks me up every time because it feels like payback for all the pink Sara used to throw at me when we were first married. Now, Ahana refuses to wear anything that isn't pink, and it's driving Sara up the wall. Meanwhile, I can't stop laughing about it.
As we start heading toward the car, I hold Ahana's hand while she clings to me like a tiny monkey, her legs wrapped around my waist. Agastya skips alongside us, his face lighting up with excitement. "Are we going to see Mommy?" he asks eagerly. "I made her a present today."
I chuckle as I buckle both of them into the backseat. "Of course," I say. "But why is it that only Mommy ever gets presents? What about me?"
Agastya, the little traitor, ignores me completely. Both of our kids are as obsessed with Sara as I am, and honestly, I can't even be mad. They adore her, and she adores them.
"Papa," Ahana pipes up as she fiddles with a tiny bracelet on her wrist. "Did I show you what Arjun chachu gave me because I started school?" She stretches out her arm, showing off a delicate bracelet with a small heart-shaped pendant. My eyes widen.
I can't believe it. My dumbass brother actually gave a four-year-old a bracelet with diamonds in it. Has he lost his mind?
"It's a heart charm! He says it's for good luck!" she announces proudly.
Before I can even respond, Agastya pulls out a necklace from beneath his shirt. "I got one too! But mine's a hand, not a heart."
I sigh and briefly bury my face in my hands. Of course, both pendants have diamonds in them. My family has a knack for going overboard, especially when it comes to the kids. Just a few days ago, my ex-stepmother sent them miniature cars-one in pink, one in black-because she had just bought a new supercar for herself and thought the kids should have matching ones. I'm convinced they're all trying to drive me insane.
