She stood there in the middle of the empty classroom staring at something no one else could see. He walked over to her and stood in silence for a moment. Her skin was a ghostly pale in the dark and her sad eyes gazed at him.
He took a step closer. He was never good at talking or making people feel better, but he knew he had to help her.
That girl who always helped him out. That girl who always smelled like the hospital.
He smiled sadly and wrapped his hands around hers.
"I know something is going on, you can trust me."
They held eye contact for a moment until she looked away.
"I'm fine."
"I know your not fine, Lucy, you can tell me anything."
"What if I said I did something wrong?" She looked up at him. "Would you hate me?"
Soran held her gaze.
"I would never hate you."
Her lips parted but nothing came out.
"You can tell me anything." He insisted once again.
Lucy looked down and pushed him away, tears falling down from her eyes. She didn't want to cry. She didn't want him to see her cry.
"I did something no one should ever do, you should hate me!"
"But I don't."
Lucy's sobs came to a stop and she looked at him in the eye, her eyes still glassy. Her bangs frames her face perfectly and the brown locks fell to her shoulderblades. And her eyes... they were a sad, sad grey.
"You should, because it's unforgivable." Lucy turned her back to him and spoke the words almost unaudiable.
"I wanted it to all end..."
Soran's eyes widened as he realized what she meant. He sprinted for her and embraced her from behind, her eyes overflowing with tears.
"It's ok to cry." Soran spoke soflty.
Lucy ran her fingers across his hands. "Soran, I know I'm being selfish but..."
Lucy moved his hands away from her and faced him.
"Would you love me?"
They held onto each other and gazed into each other's eyes. They saw one another everyday at school, never really realizing how much they needed eachother, or felt for eachother. But under the moonlit darkness they saw things they never saw before. Like how her freckles shone in the dark. Or how her lips looked so soft and gentle.
She leaned forward and pressed her lips against his. The room stilled for a moment. Time paused and it was as if they'd be young forever.
But then she moved away.
"Sorry."
And she was gone.
The word forever echoed in Soran's mind. "Sorry."
Her sad, sad eyes. If only he told her...
The next day he looked at the empty desk next to him. Sometimes he'd get the chance to see her there when no one else could.
After all... she didn't exist... at least to them.
Soran felt a prick in his heart and closed his eyes. Maybe today was the day. The day he could make her smile, and keep that smile.

When school ended Soran stayed in the classroom.
"Soran?" A girl with black hair and sky blue eyes stood before him. Her face was red and she looked nervous.
"I noticed you always stay after class."
Soran looked at her and stood still. The girl moved closer now.
"I-i, Soran, I like you-!" The girl bursted.
"It's ok if you don't..."
"I'm sorry, but I like someone else."
"Oh- are you meeting her?" The girl moved away and somewhat looked relived to get it off her chest.
"I guess..."
A few minutes passed before she started moving again. "Good luck then!"
The mysterious girl smiled and headed toward the door. "Thanks for being honest... and, she must be a lucky girl." She said before closing the door.
Soran sighed a sigh of relief. What was that about? Soran relaxed and sat on a desk. "Lucy..." Soran thought out loud, then the voice whispered in his ear. "So who is this, the one you love?" Soran turned to look at Lucy. Her face as pale as ever. She was a ghost anyway.
Soran sucked a breath in and looked at Lucy.
If that girl could do it... maybe he could too... he clenched his fists and readied himself.
"Your the one... I love." The words came out like a warm breeze and soon his face reddened.
Lucy's face softened and she walked toward a window.
"A human and a ghost... strange." Lucy smiled and looked at Soran, letting a few moments tick by.
"Let me ask you...
How do you soar without wings?
You just gotta try."
