The drive took the whole day. Both Malia and I fell asleep at some point or another and for the most part it was quiet, aside from the blaring radio. Peter was still driving and had refused both times I had offered to take the wheel so he could rest. He seemed a little too eager for this, but then again it had been a long time since he'd contributed in a fight. Maybe he missed it, who knew?
With each hour that went by I found myself getting colder. I didn't say anything at first, being too engrossed in trying to lock onto Scott's emotions, but still finding nothing but a cold empty feeling which I suspected was the reason for the Goosebumps erupting over my body. The further I tried to dig the colder I got until my teeth began to chatter and both Malia and Peter whipped their heads around to look at me, Peter frequently glancing back to the road as he did.
"How are you cold?" Malia asked.
"I think it's Scott."
Peter reached behind his seat and dug into a bag that was there before finding a jacket and throwing it over to me. "Put that on."
I was too big for me, the sleeves hanging right past the tips of my fingers and the length being that of a short dress, but it provided some warmth which I was thankful for.
"I can't sense where he is." I said. I had said it before and mentioned the cold emptiness a few times, but I found myself repeating it, growing more worried every time.
"Is he dead?" Malia asked suddenly for the first time.
"No, I would have been able to feel that, it's something else... it's..." I tried to think, to dig into my mind to find him yet again, this time concentrating harder than I ever had before at the mention of the word 'dead', but I only found a headache that caused me to press my palm to my head and double over in my chair.
"Anna? What is it?" Peter asked.
"It's dark."
"What's dark? Where Scott is?" Malia asked.
"No, it's more like... a black fog. He can't feel." I managed to explain through the splitting pain in my head.
"I thought that's what was meant to happen to you?" Malia asked. "Did he tap into that somehow?"
I shook my head and kept digging, the pain growing, this time causing me to yell out a little. The darkness from Scott's mind began to seep into mine and I felt my eyes beginning to glow. "Okay enough, stop." Peter said.
"No."
"Anna... We know where he is, we'll find out when we get there." I sat up and took deep breaths as I calmed down. The pain in my head slowly fading and eventually I opened my eyes. Malia was still looking back at me worriedly, but she also had this look. She thought I was about to lose control and she was getting ready for it.
"I'm fine." I said trying to get her to ease up a little which worked the tiniest bit. She turned back around and went back to looking out the window.
"Stay out of his head." Peter spoke again. "If it has been clouded by some form of darkness than we don't want that spreading to you." He looked over his shoulder at me and I nodded before he went back to paying attention on the road.
"Why don't you try pulling him out of it, like he does you?" Malia asked.
"I've tried. I don't know how he does it." I muttered, staring out at the black sky, feeling utterly helpless.
It was silent for a long moment more, but I did take Peter's advice. We knew where Scott was, there wasn't anything we could do for the time being.
