iv. I care

AS IF THINGS COULD NOT GET WORSE. Umbridge had the gall to put up new rules now. Eulalia couldn't lie; it made her anxious. They'd just formed their group, and suddenly a flurry of rules was appearing everywhere they went. The woman was quite exhausting; she made the work they did in class look like a breeze by comparison.

Eulalia found herself being dragged around yet again by Draco's mates. The Slytherin common room was dimly lit, casting long shadows that flickered with the flames in the fireplace. Pansy's grip was firm as she grabbed both Eulalia and Sonnet's arms, pulling them down onto the plush, emerald-green sofas where the lads were already lounging.

"What now, Malfoy? Another rule? No having mates? You know, the more you hang around Professor Umbitch, the more you start to act like her," Eulalia jibed, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

Draco scrunched up his face in annoyance. "I didn't even ask her to bring you here. I've had enough of your lip for one week." He rolled his eyes and sprawled back on the sofa, looking thoroughly exasperated. Eulalia just huffed, folding her arms as she settled into the cushions.

"This was my own doing," Pansy interjected, settling in beside the girls. They sat slightly apart from the boys, creating a clear divide. "Now that Draco's found himself a girlfriend, there's technically a new girl in the group—" She raised her hand to silence Eulalia before she could protest. "Whether you like it or not," Pansy added quickly. "And then there's Sonnet. So, technically, I'm free."

"Free from what?" Mattheo asked, rolling his eyes in exasperation.

"You," Pansy responded with a sharp sass, her eyes gleaming. Sonnet grinned and laughed under her breath. Pansy turned to look between them, starting to rant, "You know, I've never really had girl mates. I'm always around the lads—and they're a bunch of idiots. Most people just don't like me because they think I'm a—"

"Pug face?" Sonnet asked, sinking lower into her seat.

"Bitch?" Eulalia added. Pansy stared at the two girls before clearing her throat.

"I was going to say... mean girl, but that works too," Pansy responded, clearly unsatisfied. Eulalia and Sonnet exchanged glances before Sonnet sat up a bit.

"Not saying you're pug-faced—you're beautiful... or that you're a bitch—you can be sometimes. But that's just the way you're... perceived," Sonnet explained, trying to make things sound better. "No offense," she added belatedly.
