                                Chapter 2

I sat at my desk, trying to focus on my notebook, but my thoughts were miles away. He’s classroom, right across the hall, seemed to draw my attention like a magnet.

I shouldn't be doing this. But what if he’s there? Just one quick glance won’t hurt.

My heart pounded as I stole a look through the open door of his classroom. I scanned the rows of desks, my eyes darting around nervously.

Come on, Harshna, maybe he’s sitting near the front.

But he wasn’t. I couldn’t see him anywhere. Disappointment settled in my chest as I turned back to my own desk, hoping no one noticed my sneaky glances.

Where is he? Why isn’t he there?

As the bell rang, signaling the start of break time, the classroom buzzed with excitement. I could feel the energy in the air as students pushed back their chairs and rushed out. Aanya bounded over to me, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.

“Did you hear about the new movie that just came out?” she asked, practically bouncing on her feet.

“No, what movie?” I replied, forcing a smile while my thoughts lingered on that guy.

“It’s supposed to be amazing! We should all go see it this weekend!” Aanya continued, her voice full of excitement.

“Yeah, that sounds fun,” I said, though my mind was somewhere else entirely. I tried to focus, but the idea of spending time with him kept creeping in.

“What about you, Harshna?” Neha chimed in. “Are you in?”

“Of course! The more, the merrier!” Aanya said, nudging me playfully.

“Have you decided what you’ll wear to the annual function?” aadya asked, flipping her hair over her shoulder.

I shrugged. “Not yet. I’m still thinking about it.”

“Come on! You have to go for something really eye-catching!” shravani insisted. “Last year’s outfits were so boring!”

“Tell me about it,” Neha laughed. “I can still remember the disaster of last year’s dance partner. I stepped on his toes more times than I can count!”

The group burst into giggles, and I tried to join in, but my mind kept drifting back to him.

Aanya caught my eye. “What’s up with you today? You seem a little distracted.”

“Just tired, I guess,” I said quickly, hoping she wouldn’t press further. I wanted to share my feelings about him, but the words wouldn’t come.

“Hey, do you think we’ll get to perform with cute partners this time?” kavya asked, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

“Definitely! I mean, who wouldn’t want to dance with someone cute?” aadya teased, winking at me.

“Maybe I’ll end up with someone really special,” Aanya said, a dreamy look in her eyes.

I smiled along, but my heart wasn’t in it. What would it be like to dance with him?

“Come on, Harshna! Don’t just sit there! You have to help us plan this!” Aanya said, pulling me back into the conversation.

“Yeah, we need your fashion advice!” shravani chimed in.

I nodded, trying to focus on their chatter, but as they continued discussing plans for the weekend, all I could think about was that fleeting moment when I saw him, and the hope that maybe one day, I would be the one dancing with him.

I wonder if he is outside too...

The conversations around me felt like background noise. I forced myself to laugh at their jokes, but my mind kept drifting back to him.

Focus, Harshna. Just enjoy the break.

But it was hard to push him out of my mind. As the break ended and we headed to the sports ground, my thoughts were still tangled up in him. I walked with Aanya, trying to join in the excited chatter about the game ahead.

Then I heard it: “Dev! Hey, Dev!”

My heart skipped a beat. I looked up, my eyes scanning the crowd, and there he was, walking toward us with his friends.

Is that him? Is he Dev?

I watched as he turned toward his friend, a casual smile on his lips. It felt like everything around me faded, and it was just him and that name echoing in my mind.

Could it really be him?

I had never known his name, only his face and the way he moved through the school. The name seemed to fit perfectly with the image I had in my mind.

But what if I'm wrong? What if Dev is someone else?

As we neared the sports ground, my eyes kept drifting back to him, to Dev. Whether it was his name or just a coincidence, I couldn’t be sure. But in that moment, a spark of hope flickered inside me.

Maybe... just maybe...
