Tom Riddle didn't know what to expect when he got a letter from Gringotts, requesting his presence. He wasn't even aware that the Goblins knew of his return nearly two years ago, a whole year after Potter had destroyed his diary/vessel. She hadn't truly destroyed it, but instead set his soul free. For some reason, however, instead of roaming around looking for a body to possess, he had solidified in his 15 (now 17) year old body. Tom had been staying in Riddle Manor for the past two years, familiarizing himself with the past 50 years of wizarding history that he hadn't previously learned from the stupid Weasley girl.
He had absolutely no clue how the goblins had learned of his return, but Tom had been meaning to get his accounts settled anyways. He walked into the bank and up to one of the goblins.
"Ah, Lord Gaunt. Come with me," one of the Goblins said, leading him behind the desks and into a winding hallway. They stopped in front of a dark wooden door, and the goblin knocked three times before the door opened abruptly. Inside was a cozy yet simple room with a desk in the middle. The goblin who occupied it grinned sharply.
"Welcome, Lord Gaunt. It seems we have some things to discuss. My name is Sawfeng," the Goblin said bowing his head slightly and gesturing to a seat in front of him. Tom sat down gracefully and signaled for Sawfeng to continue. "Recently, us goblins have been enlightened to some information that might concern you. We recommend that you take an inheritance test similar to one you would have taken in your youth."
Tom wondered what this information would be, and why it would be revealed through an inheritance test. He had already figured out all about his family. His father's death was what led to him being stuck in the diary so long. Nevertheless, Tom took hold of the dagger Sawfeng offered him and slit his palm, allowing five drops to fall on the given parchment before healing his hand. As the page filled up, he started reading, not really surprised by anything he saw. That was until his eyes fell on one line.
Soulmate: Kya Potter
Stupid, insufferable, incredibly young Kya Potter was his soulmate. The girl he set a basilisk on, who his counterpart had been trying to kill for fifteen years, was his soulmate. When he was first started Hogwarts and found out about his inheritance of the Slytherin line, he had sworn that he would do anything to achieve his goals and would never allow himself to be distracted by something as silly as love. But that little boy in the back his mind, shoved into the darkest corner of his heart, yearned for a family, for someone to stand by him when everyone else was against him. He longed for someone that was his. His to protect. His to love.
At least his soulmate was interesting.
