The entire school day had gone by in a blur, as Tuesdays often did. The only interaction I had with Cherie was during our Geneology class, where we just made quick plans to go back to my house after school and finish looking through the box, and work a little more. At lunch, I had chatted with Rose as usual. She had way more friends than me, but every single day she sat alone with me at lunch, and with me in the classes we had with eachother. Never did it seem to bother her. She was a good friend, as shallow and different than me she can be. I was grateful to have her. Wishing me luck hanging out with Cherie, as I had updated her on how our project was going, she sent me off.
I was currently at my locker, taking my time in putting my school stuff away. The project was supposed to be done just at home, not in class. I vaguely remembered where Cherie's locker was, and started to head in that direction. Walking through the hallway, I didn't have to wander far before finding her. She was on her cell phone, leaning on her locker and talking quietly. I paused, not wanting to interrupt her conversation but not wanting to eavesdrop. I remained on the other side of the hallway, waiting.
She glanced up from her shoes, noticing me. As she did, she said something to whoever was on the phone, saying her goodbyes and hanging up. She walked over to me, giving a polite smile which I returned.
"Hey, you okay to go?" I asked her. We had decided that she would drive us from now on, since I normally walked to school anyway.
"Yes, sorry to keep you waiting. That was my aunt, I told her about the project. She says that she has some of Maria's old stuff that we could use. I'll grab it for us sometime this week, if that sounds good?"
"Of course." I replied, smiling. It was funny how all this stuff of our grandmothers existed but we never knew about it.
"Cool." She grinned, flashing her perfectly white teeth. She started to walk, nodding at me to follow her, which I did. We made our way out of the front door of the school, out to the parking lot and making our way over to her black, tiny car. She unlocked it, and I walked over to the passenger side and got in next to her. She started the engine, pulling smoothly out of her parking space and leaving the parking lot.
We drove through the small downtown area near the school, towards my house. It was silent in the car, so when her stomach growled loudly, it was clear to us both that she was starving.
I turned to look at her. "Did you eat today?"
"No." She smiled, slightly embarassed. "Didn't have time during lunch."
I got an idea, and offered it shyly. "We can stop, then. Let's pick up some food, then. On me."
She shook her head. "No, you don't have to. It's fine, really."
"No worries. Come on, I'm hungry too. Here, park over there." I pointed out a space next to a cute sandwich place.
She smiled at me gratefully. "Thank you, that's sweet of you."
"It's no problem." I replied, smiling back at her. We both looked away, now situated in the parking space. We both got out of the car, and she locked it behind us as we strolled through the front door. A bell dinged as I pushed it open, leaning back to let Cherie by. She thanked me quietly, and we moved forward where a waitress showed us to a booth.
We got comfortable on either sides of the table, and a waitress came over and asked for our drink orders before we had a chance to make conversation. She was blonde and energetic. "May I get you girls something to drink?"
I ordered a lemonade, my favorite, and Cherie asked for water. The waitress nodded, writing down our orders before walking off. I looked at Cherie.
