"Remember, guys. Tell your parents to come to class tomorrow!" - Ms. Kobayashi said cheerfully at the end of their class.
"Yes, teacher!" - the kids said and stood up to leave.
Shinichi sighed, another Parents' Day at Teitan Elementary School. This is the third one since he started attending the school and they would be drawing something and presenting it to the class. Obviously, the previous 2 times had never been attended by his previous guardians, namely Ran and Mori Kogoro, because Ran was busy with her own studies and her father exclaimed that it was not his responsibility. He believed it would be the same this time because it was on a Thursday.
"You're coming, Conan-kun?" - one of the kids in his little detective group asked.
"Just go, I'll be right behind" - he said, he had something to do.
"Will one of them come tomorrow?" - Haibara asked
"Don't think so" - Conan muttered and walked to the front of the class.
"Miss Kobayashi"
"Hm? What is it, Conan-kun?"
"My parents cannot come tomorrow. It's a work day and they can't ask for a day off"
Miss Kobayashi frowned sadly.
"Oh. Ok it's alright. It is a pity though. But don't worry, you'll still have lots of fun with the others!"
He said goodbye and walked out. He nearly ran into Haibara standing in the hallway though. He was about to exclaim in surprise when she said.
"Just so you know, I'm developing a new prototype for the antidote. It would be ready for testing in a few days"
He was still processing it when she abruptly walked away. But as soon as he realized what she was saying, he was positively beaming. Yay!!!!
That night, he had dinner with both men. This dinner thing that they had been doing was going well enough, for most of the time. He didn't mention anything about the Parents' Day of course. It wasn't like one of them could abandon a mission and come to an elementary school to see him talk about a childish drawing. He didn't want to get in the way of their work, lest they regret agreeing to this cover.
"Hey, let's go for a walk. I want to look out for any suspicious cameras or vehicles around" - Akai said as they cleaned up.
Right, the walks. They had done it 3 times in the past few days. And in 2 of them, he fell asleep before he even got home! He must have fallen asleep sometime during their walk, that's the only explanation for why he woke up and the last thing he remembered was taking a walk, not lying on his bed. Those walks had always made him sleepy and given him a good sleep.
So he agreed to the walk.
The next morning, he woke up feeling tired. He felt like sneezing and his throat hurt.
God. He felt like he was about to be sick.
Still, he pushed himself out of bed so he would not worry his housemates.
2 hours after the kids arrived at school, the parents started piling in. He knew his wouldn't come though. It has always been like that. Even when he was a child the first time, his parents didn't come. They were all busy with their work, so he was always alone on those days. Of course, he was sad, but he guessed he had gotten used to it. He just felt like he had to be independent from a young age, he had never felt like depending on anyone.
He watched the kids happily welcoming their parents and, he had to admit, he felt bitter. He wasn't supposed to feel like that, was he? He was supposed to be used to it.
