María Alba Guijarro x Alice Andersson

María is visiting Alice's apartment in Kent. It's late afternoon and the soft glow of the setting sun casts long shadows across the cluttered living room. The clutter is like a simile to their relationship. María sits at the small dining table, her laptop open to a university website. The Leeds University website to more specific. She's meticulously reviewing the application requirements. The Sport and Exercise Sciences BSc course is tempting her to apply. Her fingers tap rhythmically against the keyboard. As she imagines her future in her head. Olympics. Medals. Glory. Money. Mansions. #1. World records.

Across the room, Alice is pacing back and forth, her anxiety evident in every step. Alice finally breaks the silence, her voice filled with desperation. "María, we need to talk about this. UAL is perfect for you. It's in London, we can get an apartment and stay together. That's what you want. Right. And it has everything you need for your sports too. The BA (Hons) Fashion Sportswear course could work. It's different but it's sport. I'm sure they'll have a sports teams too. You'll still be able to be a professional runner."

María barely glances up, her tone's cold and dismissive. "Leeds has one of the best programs in the country, Alice. It's what I want. Plus Fashion sportswear is your thing. Not mine. Why would I wanna design clothes for the sport I should be playing?" Alice stops pacing, her eyes welling with tears. "But what about us? We've built a life here. We can build a life there too. You can't just throw it all away for some university."

María's eyes flash with irritation.
"I'm not throwing anything away. I'm planning my future. You're the one who can't see past your own insecurities. Not everything is about you. What about me? Don't you care about me? I'm not going to your shitty university. Ok? I'm not throwing us away. I would never because... I'm what's best for you. For us. I've always known you don't care and now you're proving my point... You're supposed to support me, Alice."

The argument escalates quickly, Alice and María are both now throwing accusations at each other. "I do care Marí, you know I do."
"Al, stop. I don't deserve to be lied to by you."
"I'm sorry. Please just think about it. Think about us. The life we want. Two kids and a cat in a small apartment in a modern city down south... A life where we can be together!"

"No! That's the life YOU want... Alice." Alice is clinging to María's arm now, pleading and crying, while María's words grow harsher, her need to control the situation becoming more apparent. "You're so selfish... Everything is always about you! If you really care about me, you will respect what I tell you. No one else can put up with you like I do. You should be grateful I'm still here, otherwise who would be by your side now? Who would love you as good as I do? Nobody. Nobody wants to put up with you and you"

The argument reaches its fever pitch when Alice, in a moment of vulnerability, reveals her deepest fear. "How can you be by my side if you leave me and go to Leeds! I don't wanna lose you. You are my everything. Like you said. I'm nothing without you. I need you with me. I can't live alone." María looks at her with slight anger and gives an ice-cold response straight to her face.

"Maybe if you weren't so clingy, I wouldn't feel the need to leave... Leave you. Leave us. Let you become a nobody. This is all your fault I want to leave. You're the reason you're a nobody." Alice's face crumples, the weight of María's words hitting her hard. She feels María's cold words swirl in her chest like her heart has been frozen.

Not being able to keep her emotions stable, she retreats to her bedroom, slamming the door behind her so she won't need to face María. "I wouldn't have to be like this if you weren't so difficult." María shouts as the door slams. María sits back down at the table, the room is now eerily quiet. She stares at her laptop, the cursor blinking back at her, a silent reminder of the choices she has yet to make. But most likely going to make it.

The unresolved argument brings tension in the air, a testament to the toxic dynamics of their relationship. María takes a deep breath, the hardness in her shoulders momentarily easing. But the conflict is far from over, and both María and Alice are left to resolve this on their own, knowing that the next confrontation is only a matter of time. A juxtaposition in their relationship forms again showing the contrast of where they should be if they want to make this in the long run. Yet neither of them want to admit it. So they suppress it. Trapping them in this relationship. A ticking time bomb.
