As the car drove towards our destination, neither of us said anything. He didn't even spare a glance in my direction; his attention was solely focused on the road. The silence felt thick, almost palpable, as if it carried the weight of unspoken words.
When we arrived near the campus, I asked him to stop the car and drop me off a little before the entrance. If I got out of his car right in front of the campus, others might notice us, and that was a complication I didn't need.
He nodded curtly, pulling over to the side. "Here is fine," I said, peeking outside the window to ensure there were no familiar faces around. Not a single student I knew was in sight. Relieved, I got out of the car quickly and started walking towards the campus. He drove off without another word, heading towards the parking area.
It took me about five minutes to arrive at the campus gate. As soon as I stepped through, I was greeted by Kritika's dramatic voice.
"Pranam ho devi ji, finally aapke darshan huye," she said, her tone dripping with playful sarcasm.
(Oh look, who has finally graced us with her presence)
I rolled my eyes, trying to suppress a smile. "Stop being so dramatic, Kritika. I'm here now, aren't I?"
She laughed, linking her arm with mine. "Where have you been these days? What's going on with you?"
I shrugged, trying to play it cool. "Nothing much, just busy with... stuff."
"Stuff, huh?" She gave me a knowing look. "Well, whatever it is, you're going to spill the beans eventually."
We walked together towards the main building, the campus buzzing with the usual morning activity. As we passed by groups of students chatting and laughing, I couldn't help but feel a pang of unease. Balancing this strange marriage with my college life was proving to be more challenging than I had imagined.
"So, what's the plan for today?" I asked, trying to divert the conversation away from myself.
Kritika grinned. "Well, we've got that big test today, remember? The one everyone's been freaking out about?"
