As I held her in my embrace, her sobs slowly faded into soft whimpers, the tremors in her body still present but not as violent.
Just some time ago, she was fine, happy even, but now... My jaw clenched as I thought about what could have happened if I hadn't gotten here in time. The idea of her being hurt, scared, alone—it made my stomach twist into knots. My grip on her tightened protectively, as if that alone could shield her from the world.
I pulled back slightly, just enough to cup her face, brushing away the tears that streaked her delicate skin with my thumb.
"Baby, look at me," I said softly, my voice gentle yet firm. Her wet, glassy eyes slowly met mine, filled with confusion and fear. The sight of her lip trembling, her small frame shaking like she was barely holding it together, broke something deep inside me.
How had it come to this?
What was she doing here?
And....
How came she end up drinking this much?
Her friend's voice interrupted my thoughts, pulling my attention to the side. "I'll take my leave," she said, her tone soft, but I could hear the concern lacing her words.
She took a few tentative steps backward, casting glances at my Sara before moving out of sight.
For a moment, I turned my focus back to my girl. Her trembling form, her tear-streaked face—it broke me. I leaned down, pressing a soft kiss on her forehead as I whispered, "You're safe, love... No one's going to—"
Before I could finish, her scream cut through the air, a loud, terrified cry that sent chills racing down my spine.
The sound was immediately followed by the sharp crack of a gunshot.
The shot tore through the hallway, deafening, freezing the world around me in an instant. My heart stopped, blood turning to ice as I instinctively pulled her tighter into my embrace, shielding her body with mine.
