"Major Gilbert," Violet wrote. "I've been in the hospital for 120 days now.
"My strength has almost recovered.
"Movement is still a little difficult, but I can perform my duties.
"Please let me return to my post soon."
The pen fell to the floor as her hand slipped, and a gust of wind carried her letter out the window.
The blonde attempted to pick up the pen, though she only managed to fall off the bed herself.
At the sudden 'thud', Hodgins and the nurse came rushing into the nearly empty ward.
"Are you okay?" Hodgins asked as the nurse supported her arm, trying to get her back in her bed.
Violet looked past them to the door through which they came.
"Where's Major Gilbert?"
"He's, uh, not here."
"Where is he? Did he return home already?
"How are his injuries doing? I know they were pretty severe. Tell me. Is the major actually... alive?"
"He-"
"You're being discharged from the hospital." the nurse interrupted. "Lieutenant Colonel Hodgins came all this way to pick you up, you know?"
Hodgins agreed awkwardly, an attempt at a reassuring smile on his face.
Shakily getting to her feet, Violet saluted, back straight as ever despite the soreness of her body.
"Excuse me, sir. I had forgotten you were a lieutenant. I apologize."
"Violet, relax. Take a seat."
Violet sat back down on the cheap, paper-like bedsheets.
"What were you doing?" Hodgins inquired.
"I was writing a report to Major Gilbert. They said that writing words down would help to improve my condition a great deal." She glanced out of the open window. "So, how is he?"
The older man hesitated, his eyes focused on the wooden floorboards.
"Don't worry, Violet." he looked up again, his assuring front having returned. "He's actually the one who sent me here to get you."
"That means he's alright then." she concluded. "The doctor told me that we won the war. What post is he assigned to now? When will I be able to join him?"
"Why don't you get changed first?" Hodgins suggested, exiting the room, leaving a long, emerald skirt and a white blouse on the bed.
She joined him outside a few minutes later, followed by the nurse with a case of the girl's belongings.
Quickly checking through the contents of the case, Violet noticed a certain gift was missing.
"Where is the emerald brooch?" she demanded.
"This was all there was at the garrison and the place they found you."
Violet closed the case and stood up abruptly.
"If it's not here, I have to look for it!"
The red-haired man called after her, grabbing her arm before the could run off.
"I'll be sure to look for it, don't worry."
"Yes, but...!"
"You are to come with me now. Those are his direct orders."
