At long last, an ancient-looking archway atop a small hill leaned into Annabeth's peripheral.

"There it is!" yelled Grover, their satyr guide. "Half Blood Hill!"

It was difficult to hear him over the heavy rain and occasional thunderclap, but the monstrous roar that followed his exclamation overshadowed all other noise.

"Run!"

Annabeth's heartbeat quickened. It was getting harder and harder to keep her footing in the muddy terrain as the slope steepened. One wrong slip could send her on a one way ticket into some beast's mouth.

Despite her best efforts, Annabeth couldn't help but worry for Thalia and Luke. They told her that they would always be with her, always be a family, but what if they couldn't make it up this hill to safety? What if Annabeth was sent back to her father, who would inevitably kick her out before she could even enter the house, in fear of the monsters scaring her stepbrothers?

Tears overflowed the barricades of Annabeth's eyelids, and she subconsciously looked back after her only true family.

Thalia was a fast runner, and her trusty bow struck true neigh on every time, but the monsters were still quickly approaching behind her.

Luke was in a similar situation, though the blonde had managed to overtake Thalia by a few paces in the race for safety.

Grover with his goat legs was also moving fast, ahead of Thalia and Luke but still a few steps behind Annabeth.

The hellhounds weren't far behind her new-found kin now. Just a few more bounds and they'd have Thalia, but they were so close to the barrier...

"Get to the barrier! Its me they're after!"

Just two sentences was all Annabeth needed to know that she probably wouldn't hear Thalia's voice again.

At last, Annabeth stumbled past the ancient-looking arch, past the barrier.

Heavy panting told her that Grover had made it too.

Heart-wrenching cries informed her that Luke was safe.

Heart-wrenching cries also told her that Thalia was not.

As her vision faded from blurry to black, she felt herself being lifted off the ground and carried down the other side of the hill.

Light poured through the curtains as the blonde girl awoke at last.

She quickly realised herself to be in some kind of infirmary, judging by the various medical tools laid out in a somewhat orderly fashion, though certainly not organized enough to be able to keep track of everything.

A boy walked in, breifly looking over each bed as he passed, eventually reaching Annabeth.

"How are you feeling?" he asked.

She gave a slight nod. Aside from sore legs and a few cuts and bruises, she felt fine.

"Is this Camp Half-Blood?"

The boy grinned, "Welcome home, Annabeth."

As Annabeth finally closed her eyes in her bunk in the Athena cabin (due to being claimed at birth then told by her father of her heritage) memories of the day flew through her head: the twelve cabins of the Olympians, the lava wall, meeting Chiron the legendary centaur hero-trainer, processing the loss of Thalia.

She soon drifted off into a dream-filled sleep.

A woman in Greek battle armour appeared before her, and she immediately recognised her.
