It was a few days later. It was Friday. Val couldn't hangout, she had a family reunion to go to. She begged her parents to let her stay the night with me, but there was no getting out of it. So I'd be best friendless until Monday.
There's a lot of things I could do, but they're not as fun when I don't have Val.
I mean, I could have painted. But did I feel like it? No. I laid in my bed, going through the list of things I could possibly do today. I rolled over and looked at my alarm clock.
9:30 a.m.
I groaned.
I guess I could see what Kenny was doing. Kenny was a girl in Val and I's class. I hung out with her when I didn't have Val, and I know that sounds shitty, but she and I knew we weren't friends. We just enjoyed each other's company every so often. We were like, each other's back up friend when no one else could hangout.
I got up and walked to the kitchen, dialing her number. She answered after a few rings.
I told her I was bored and Val-less. She replied saying pretty much the same thing. I asked if she wanted to hangout and she said yeah.
"Rad, I'll be there in a few." I told her before I hung up. At least I'd have something to do today.
I walked to my room and searched for clothes.
After I was dressed, I then grabbed my keys and headed to Kenny's.
When I got there, I knocked and she let me in.
We were in her room, sitting on her bed with our backs against the wall. She had put on some music, a random cassette.
"How are you?" She questioned, given who knows how long it's been since we've fucking hung out. I shrugged as I took a sip from the beer she had gotten me. She nodded in understanding, also taking a sip of her beer.
It was a couple minutes or so.
"Still bored, Birdie?" She questioned. "Yeah, you?" I replied. She nodded. "Yeah." I said just to say it as I took another drink from my beer.
It then got quiet, us just sitting in a comfortable silence. The music playing.
The song, or any of the songs really, didn't ring a bell in my head. They didn't sound familiar.
"Hey Kenny?" I questioned with furrowed eyebrows, wanting to know the name of the cassette we were listening to.
"Who is this?" I questioned as I pointed to the cassette player on her nightstand, hoping she'd tell me. She lit a cigarette before she replied to me. "Bon Jovi." She said as she took a drag.
I furrowed my eyebrows, not sure if I heard her correctly. "Bon Josie?" I asked, she laughed out loud. "No, Bon Jovi." She said, emphasizing the second part.
Call me slow, call me dumb, whatever, fuck off. "Bon what?" I questioned. Her humored smile then dropped. She looked at me seriously. "You don't know who Bon Jovi is?!" She asked with confused wide eyes.
"I don't." I told her honestly. She shook her head as she leaned over to her night stand and played the cassette over again, turning up the volume.
"This, Bird, is Bon Jovi. Their very first album." She said excitedly as she sat back down. We then proceeded to listen to the whole album. Kenny of course telling me the title of each song every time they changed.
Runaway
Roulette
She Don't Know Me
Shot Through The Heart
Love Lies
Breakout
Burning For Love
Come Back
Get Ready
"So what do you think?" Kenny asked me when the album ended. I opened my mouth to give my input, but I was interrupted before I could even speak.
"For fucksake!" Kenny yelled pissed off as the phone rang. She got up nonetheless. The phone stopped ringing and I heard muffled voices and eventually she came back. She looked shocked.
"Birdie, you're not gonna fucking believe this." She told me intently. She didn't sit back down. "What?" I asked, wanting to know what I wasn't gunna believe.
She herself looked at me in disbelief. "We're going to a concert tonight." She informed me.
See, I knew When I called Kenny it was gonna lead to me having something to do today.
I gave her a smile. "Cool, who?" I questioned.
A smile appeared on her face. "Bon Jovi!" She said like she had just won a million dollars. "That's hell of a coincidence." I told her truthfully. She nodded, explaining to me that one of her friends got tickets.
"Cool, well in the meantime you wanna get out of here and have some fun?" I questioned her. She nodded. We then left. On the way to wherever we were going, Kenny asked me a question.
"So, what do you think of the band?" She said, still wanting to know my input.
"You mean Bon Jovi." I said as I emphasized their name while also leaning over so I was in Kenny's face. Letting her know that I did know the bands name now.
She nodded excessively with a smile on her face. "I like them." I told her honestly. Their music was good. How I never knew about them surprised me. I listened to a lot of rock music.
"Favorite song?" She interrogated. I had to think a minute, trying to remember what title of which song had that one beat. "The albums pretty good. But my favorite songs would gotta be She Don't Know Me and Runaway." I said, actually remembering which song was which.
She nodded in approval.
Kenny and I ended up just getting lunch and then just walking around New Jersey. "You want to know something else about them?" She questioned. "About who?" I replied.
"Bon Jovi." She stated. "What about 'em?" I asked. She smiled. "They're from New Jersey." I looked at her like I didn't believe her.
"Kenny, if there was a rockstar from Jersey, it would be the only thing people talked about." I told her. It was true. She shook her head and shrugged. "They've only have a few albums. They'll get bigger."
I shrugged. I wish I was with Val. I'd be having a grand old time with her. And I'm not saying that Kenny isn't good company, I'm just saying that I miss my best friend.
We continued to walk for a few more hours.
At least I did get introduced to some new music, and I had something to do later tonight.
I still didn't know much about Bon Jovi, but their first album was pretty rad.
