As expected, the woman bent over and picked my discarded shoe up, then started turning it over. She brought it a little closer to her and sniffed, then wrinkled her nose and made a disgusted face. Her cameraman was nearby now, so she turned to him. "Smells like me when I have an infection."

"TMI, Gloria," a bored sounding voice that I'd assumed was the cameraman's said.

I completely agreed with him. The nerve of her to compare the smell of my feet to that.

"Do you know what this means?" she went on to say.

The cameraman was shaking his head while yawning. She frowned at him and lifted up the shoe, practically shoving it down his throat. "She's trying to get in. She's somewhere around here. We were the first ones to discover which school she goes to and get here on time. We can't let any other paper report this story before we do, at least, not with the amount of information we have."

"I see. You want us to find her before they do?"

"Yes, you moron. Think about how big this would be for our careers!"

He went silent for a couple more minutes. Eventually, he sighed and steadied his camera on his shoulder. "I guess it won't hurt. Let's find the topless girl."

And with that, they started searching high and low for me. My heart was thumping wildly in my chest, watching them circle the school and come back to my location, looking for me.

I mean, I could perfectly well understand why they didn't think to search inside the bushes. I could feel the sting of a million cuts all over me. Nobody else in their right mind would've thought to enter such a prickly space.

It was a relief watching them go further from the school, though sticking at the sides, in search of me. They were so out of sight that I didn't think they would see if I got out, so I did. Well, I tried.

There was adrenaline rushing through me when I first jumped in the bush, but it was fading now, and I was beginning to feel every sharp prick from the thorns, every trickle of the red liquid.

Someone, some good and kind person, decided that that was the right moment to reach into the bush and tug me out forcefully. I felt a particularly sharp thorn graze my forehead and slice the flesh, but I didn't cry out.

Next thing I knew, a coat was draped over my shoulders, concealing my whole uniform with its large size. The person had me against his front, and he began walking towards the school with his hands on my shoulders.

I knew it was Kendrick by his scent alone. The butterflies in my tummy started their thing again. Working my nerves to calm down, I fixed my eyes on his black Jordan's. "Thanks for having my back."

He didn't say anything until I noticed that we weren't heading for the gates. He could sense my hesitation, the growing fear reminding me that he was still much bigger than me and that I was practically defenseless. "This is a secret... well not so secret entry to the school. It's sort of a secret."

He was taking me to a door. It was several meters away on the right of the gates and didn't seem connected to the school in anyway. It looked like a public toilet, in fact.

I decided to trust him and let him take me inside. Shockingly, there was no toilet in there. There was something like a trapdoor.

"Kendrick..."

"Just trust me Lea. It'll be fine, I promise."

He bent over and pulled open the trapdoor, revealing an underground staircase. He turned to me with a frown, like he was annoyed to have to show me this place but he had no choice. "Come," he said.

I inhaled deeply, realizing that I also had no choice. I took his hand and we began to descend, with me closely behind him. After a few more stairs down we reached the levelled floor, and in front of us, there was a separate staircase up.

We took the other staircase, and when we got to the top and he opened another door, we were on the school's grounds. My mouth hung open in shock as he led us into the bathroom.

The bathroom in question had been broken down since Martin attended, but it had never been fixed. I saw why now. It was off bounds, but somehow, it lead to an underground pathway? What was happening? We went out of the empty room as quietly as we could and went into the main hallway, which was incredibly quiet and void.

"I'll need you to stay very quiet, Lea. Everyone's been forced into their rooms because they're trying to catch the truant. Go to your room, we'll have to talk later. I'll text. Go now, hurry."

I didn't want him to leave. Unconsciously, I grabbed his hand that was on my shoulder and squeezed it, long before I realized what exactly I was doing. I tensed up a second later, but he simply removed his hand from mine and pushed me softly in the direction of the girls' dormitories.

"Go," he whispered softly.

I gulped. I could hear him leaving, and the walls suddenly felt suffocating to me. I knew what this drill was like, since it wasn't the first time someone left campus without proper permission. A hall monitor would round the corner at any second, and I would be caught.

"Lea, go! I said go!" Kendrick whispered, more harshly this time.

But I couldn't just 'go'. Because my stalkers had texted me in the middle of this whole thing, telling me that I had a surprise waiting in my room, and I didn't want to know what it was. Call it intuition, but I wasn't interested in whatever surprise was waiting for me.

"Lea! Fuck, come to my room then."

I turned around and gazed at him adoringly, albeit shocked. "What?"

"Follow me." He didn't wait for me to reply, he simply grabbed my hand and dragged me with him. We managed the trip to his room without being caught. He shoved me inside as soon as the door was open, then came in after me, shutting the door behind him.

I collapsed onto his bed with a huge sigh of relief once he was inside. My heart was exhausted from beating wildly when I was getting railed, when I was being stalked by those journalists and now when I saw the man of my dreams.

I was breathing deeply and finally relaxing, but Kendrick had other plans.

"Get up. Get up right now, you have a shit ton of explaining to do."
