I look around carefully before opening the heavy apartment door. I insert the key into the lock, hearing a soft click. I turn the knob slowly and pull the door open, trying not to make any noise. Once it's open, I step outside and close the door quietly. I let out a deep breath, hugging myself for warmth.

I hurry to the elevator, pressing the button with trembling fingers. When the doors open, I step inside, feeling a mix of relief and fear. I can hardly believe I'm finally escaping. I use the back exit of the building and run into the dark alley, checking to make sure my backpack is still with me. It is, and that gives me a little comfort.

I've been running for as long as I can remember. Running from this place, this town, maybe even this city. I wish I had enough money to leave the country, but right now, survival is all that matters. As I sprint down the alley, I trip and fall on a hard rock. My thighs hit something sharp—probably a piece of glass. I cry out in pain but force myself to get up. My leg throbs, and I can feel warm blood streaming down from my injury through my clothes, but I can't stop.

I push through the pain and keep running. I know my wound might leave a scar or worse, but I can't waste time worrying about it. I'm starting a new chapter of my life, and whatever happens next, I have to face it head-on.
