September 15th 1987 / Sayreville New Jersey
“So how was Florida?” Carol asked over dinner.
Jon and Amelia grinned like naughty children that’d eaten the last chocolate bar.
“It was beautiful,” Amelia answered so to avoid suspicion.
“Did you get round to much sightseeing?”
“A little bit here n’ there,” Jon replied, “But we mainly stuck to the beach. There was a nice lake nearby too.”
“Go skinny dipping by any chance?” Anthony grinned.
“Yeah, actually,” Jon responded with an equally wide smile.
Amelia covered her face with her hand. Curse his lack of shame.
“Alright,” Carol warned, “What about the hotel, was it nice?”
“Yeah,” Jon replied enthusiastically with a mouthful of food, “It was beautiful. You should go sometime, I’ll book you a trip.”
“I don’t think so,” Carol smiled, “Work’s been busy recently. Maybe next year when it’s warmer again.”
Jon rolled his eyes. Work! It was madness.
“Mom, how many times do I gotta tell you to kick back n’ relax. Retire for God’s sake, I can afford that.”
“Your money is yours, dear, not mine or your father’s. We appreciate what you do for us but-“
“But what, Mom? What’s the point in workin’ at the florists, you’re workin’ hard n’ for what, I can get you whatever you want. I can buy the place n’ fire you if that’s what it takes.”
“That’s enough,” Carol snapped. “Get your head out of your rear end and listen to yourself. I like working, I don’t want to retire. Don’t ever say something like that to me again, you’re getting too big for your boots with that kind of talk.”
Jon sunk back in his chair with an embarrassed grumble.
Amelia reached for his thigh beneath the table. She understood him, he didn’t want his mother working all the time, but Carol had been right to chide him. Just because he could do something didn’t mean he should.
“Jon and I have something for you, anyway,” Amelia said cheerfully. Jon looked up as if to say ‘now??’ She only nodded excitedly.
“For whom, dear. Me?” Carol frowned.
“All of you.”
She dug an envelope out of her coat that hung on the back of the chair and handed it over. Carol’s thumbs were in it immediately.
It was a small card, on the front of it read,
You are cordially invited to the wedding of,
Jon and Amelia
