James came over to sit by me, looking...not happy? And a bit scared. Was I too violent? Did he think I'd hit him too? Shit!
I tapped his shoulder as gently as I could and he turned to look at me. "Hey, James, I'm, um, sorry if I scared ya."
I saw Sammy, who had just sat down, smirk. Is he making fun of James? Or me?
I turned around, pretty sure I was either scowling or smiling. "Ya ain't makin' fun, is ya?"
Sammy shook his head, patting my shoulder. "Don't worry Jed. I don't make fun of my friends."
I nodded. "A'ight..."
James tapped my shoulder. "Calm down, Jed. You are scowling."
I touched my face and realized he was right. That must be why my vision changed. I fixed my face, feeling it to make sure I was happy-looking. "Better?"
James nodded. "Yes. And you did not scare me, Jed."
I'm pretty sure I was beaming. "Praise the Lord!"
Mrs. Kidney sighed. "Jed, please, shut up."
I nodded quickly and mimed zipping my lips. "Yes ma'am!"
She nodded. "Thank you."
For the rest of the class, I did my best to stay quiet, only getting hit with the ruler once!
I was so proud of myself.
At least, I was till shit hit the fan.
