In the car, Summer is a bit restless as she fidgets next to me. I put on the music to try to calm her down.
She's sober as a judge. No wonder.
"Don't be so nervous." I press buttons on the steering, trying to find something a little more mellow.
Summer exhales, and her shoulders drop. "That's a lot of tension you're carrying around, Lennox."
"It's been an... eventful night. Tension is inevitable, I guess." She looks out the window. Instinct makes me reach for her hand, but carefully.
"Try not to worry so much." I gently squeeze her hand and she squeezes back.
Summer wants to be as carefree and without a worry like me. Like I've always been. She looks at me and smiles. "I will. It's just— my dad—" as she watches me, my jaw stiffens, but my eyes stay on the road ahead.
"That's gonna work itself out." I push through my clenched jaw and manage a smile.
Within minutes, I pull up to a huge iron gate. Very Elizabethan, or maybe Victorian. Summer pulls out her cellphone and presses some buttons, which open the gate.
I drive into the Lennox Estate, and as I drive up to the house, the gate closes behind us. I pull up by the main house right at the entrance.
"I'm really happy you came out tonight." My hand glides down her face and then rests on her cheek. She closes her eyes, leans her head into my hand and then puts her hand over mine.
"So am I." She opens her eyes and meets mine, as I look at her.
"See you in school?" I nod, but there's a slight hesitation. And Summer picks it up. "What?"
"You're not worried about being seen with the school's resident fuckboy?" Summer chuckles, but nervously. I can tell the difference between her nervous laughs and her uninhibited ones. Then she shrugs, "Recovering fuckboy?" Now it's my turn to laugh.
"It doesn't matter what anyone sees or says, Nate." She says this with so much certainty that even she believes it. I feel a pull in my stomach. Without thinking, I kiss her like she's the only thing keeping me alive. Summer doesn't fight it, if anything, she matches my hunger and my desperation.
"Summer, we really shouldn't..." I don't even manage to finish my thoughts when Summer moves over to sit on top of me while I'm still devouring her.
"Shouldn't what?" She slows down, then pulls away from me. While she's still on top of me, her fingers find their way into my strands of blonde locks which have now gone unruly, as she plays with it, teasingly. She smiles, innocently and playfully, waiting for me to answer.
I feel intoxicated and in a daze, when I finally manage to speak. My gaze softens.
"You are gonna cause so much shit for me, little daredevil." Summer's soft giggle is enough for me to lose all my inhibitions and just make her mine right there in my car. I move closer to kiss her, devouring her again.
Summer's phone starts ringing, which pulls both of us out of our fantasy and back to reality — in front of Summer's house. We both exhale, but the disappointment does not go unnoticed. Summer moves off of me and back into her seat, grabs her phone and checks it.
"Paise is checking to see if I made it home okay." She slams her head back against the headrest and exhales again. I brush a stray curl away from her face.
"Safe and sound." I feel her skin heat up, before she quickly pulls away to get out of the car.
I roll down the passenger window, and she leans in. "Tomorrow." I say it so "matter-of-factly". She's too far gone to say no. I wink at her, which makes her blush even harder, something I didn't even possible.
