The silence of the early morning was soothing, the only sounds being the distant birdsong and the soft crunch of their footsteps on the sidewalk.
Lily found herself lost in her thoughts, her mind wandering to all manner of things, but always eventually circling back to Kai. She tried to push the thoughts away, but they were stubborn, lingering like a specter at the edge of her consciousness.
By the time they arrived back at the house, Lily was feeling a bit weary from the long walk and the early morning. Lumi, on the other hand, seemed energized, her tail wagging rapidly.
As soon as they stepped inside, Lumi darted to her bowl, waiting for her promised breakfast. Lily smiled at the dog's eagerness, but there was something else on her mind.
"Wait a bit, Lumi," Lily said to the waiting dog, "I need to go get ready for work first."
The dog glanced up at her, her head tilted in a silent question. Lily responded with a pat on the head before heading to her room to grab some fresh clothes for her shower.
Once in her room, Lily quickly gathered the clothes she needed and headed for the bathroom. She started the water, setting it to the perfect temperature, and began to strip off her clothes.
The hot water cascaded over her as she stepped into the shower, the steam relaxing her tired muscles and clearing her foggy mind.
The warm water felt like a small piece of heaven to Lily. For those few moments, she was finally able to let go of all her thoughts and just be.
She stood under the spray, letting the water wash over her, her mind blissfully blank for the first time since her encounter with Kai.
Lily stood in the shower for a few more moments, relishing the peace and quiet. But eventually, reality came knocking, reminding her that she had to get ready for work.
Reluctantly, she turned off the water and stepped out of the shower, wrapping a towel around herself and walking back to her room to finish getting ready.
Back in her room, Lily quickly dried her hair and got dressed in her work clothes. She checked her reflection in the mirror, smoothing down a few stray hairs and making sure she looked presentable.
The thought of going to work made her feel a bit weary, but she pushed the feeling aside. A good meal and a strong cup of coffee would do the trick.
Giving Lumi, who was lounging on the bed, a quick pat, she left the room, her mind turning to breakfast and the long work day ahead of her.
Once she had finished breakfast and fed Lumi, Lily checked the time. She had to get to work, and with the distance between her home and the city, she needed to leave early.
Grabbing her bag and keys, she gave Lumi a final pat on the head before locking the door behind her and heading to her car.
The drive to the city was long and uneventful. Lily spent most of it lost in her thoughts, music playing softly from the radio to fill the silence.
The early morning rush hour hadn't started yet, so the roads were mostly clear, making the commute slightly less tedious than usual. After about an hour, she finally arrived at her office building.
As she walked into the Thompson & Co. office building, she was met by the familiar sight of her workplace - a sleek, modern building with a receptionist's desk in the lobby. A few of her co-workers were milling around, sipping coffee and chatting in small groups.
With a sigh, she approached the elevator and headed to her floor.
Once she arrived at her desk, Lily switched on her computer and began to go through her emails. A few routine tasks needed to be completed, nothing too complex or time-consuming.
Just as she was finishing up, her boss, the CEO, Mr. Thompson, stepped out of his office and beckoned her over.
"Ah, Lily," Mr. Thompson greeted her with a smile, "Could you come to my office for a moment? I need to discuss something with you."
Curious, Lily nodded and followed her boss into his office, curious about what he needed to talk about.
"Lily," Mr. Thompson began, "I have something important to discuss with you. Our company will be holding a meeting in the afternoon to announce the new CEO."
Lily's eyes widened slightly and she felt a pang of sadness. She had been working with Mr. Thompson for years, assisting him in his duties, and the thought of him leaving left her feeling a bit wistful.
Mr. Thompson noticed the look on Lily's face and chuckled softly. "I see you're not pleased with my retirement," he teased.
Lily couldn't help but smile and nod. "I will miss you, sir. You're not easy to replace," she responded, only half joking.
"I'm glad to hear that, Lily," Mr. Thompson chuckled. "You've been a loyal and efficient assistant throughout the years. Hopefully, the new CEO will appreciate your skills and talents just as much as I do."
As he spoke, he couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness himself. Leaving his position meant leaving behind the company he had built from the ground up and the people that had helped make it successful, including Lily.
