She took his hand, noticing how small and fragile it felt in hers. Together, they began to weave through the bustling streets of Harajuku.
"Are we safe now, Gaijin?" Akira asked.
"Almost, Akira." Jelna assured him, as she scanned the crowds one last time for any sign of pursuit. She escorted Akira to the subway, and then ensured his safety with a series of spells that shrouded him from magical detection.
As Jelna stood beside him, she felt the Cosmic Compass in her pocket vibrating, suddenly coming to life.
"This is where we part ways, Akira," Jelna said, her voice tinged with melancholy. "You're fast and clever. You have a bright future ahead of you. Just remember to use your gifts for good, alright?" She held his eyes for a moment.
Akira nodded and smiled, before turning and boarding the subway.
As she watched Akira leave, Jelna's mind shifted gears. The Morwyn followers' interest in the trinket was more than mere coincidence.
Why were they gathering artefacts? How had the trinket found its way outside Eldora?
A report to the Archmage was due, but her duty recruiting talents on Earth was not yet complete. There was room for a slight detour though – and she decided to indulge in a rare moment of personal pleasure.
Earlier, Jelna had spotted an old bookshop during the chase. Now, she found herself irresistibly drawn to the magic there. Not the magic of her world, but of the quiet allure that only a universe of words could offer.
As she stepped inside, the bell above the door chimed softly, its delicate whisper a stark contrast to the clamour of the city outside. The air was thick with the scent of aged paper and leather, a timeless perfume that spoke of long-forgotten tales. Shelves towered around her, each laden with books. Their spines were creased with the passage of time; their titles whispered of the worlds contained within their pages.
Jelna trailed her fingers over the bindings. As a Silvertongue, her connection to languages and lore ran deep. In these texts, Jelna saw not just words, but voices from the past calling out to be heard and remembered. She dreamed of preserving the legacies and cultures of different dimensions by creating her own grand library, where no language would be lost to time again.
Exiting the bookshop, Jelna clutched a collection of ancient texts to her chest. The musty scent of old paper and the weight of centuries-old knowledge filled her with a deep sense of purpose. She melted into the shadows of the night, her silhouette blending with the mystique of Tokyo's streets.
Jelna's fingers tightened around the Cosmic Compass pulsing insistently in her pocket. She pulled it out. The compass's usually steady needle was swinging wildly between extremes. These erratic movements could only signify one thing: there was not just one, but two talents that she still had to find on Earth.
Such a phenomenon was extremely rare. It indicated that the individuals she was tracking possessed exceptional abilities. Or perhaps, their gifts were influencing each other's energies.
Perhaps, this duo might even have a connection to the prophecy that would save her world.
