Settled in a homey room that has been assigned as mine for corporate purpose, I looked through the opened window cuz the view in OAU was irresistible. The serene environment merged with several cultural sculptures and how everywhere screamed 'tradition' always got to me.
I wouldn't think a place in Nigeria could so accommodating, I like it here, I like the people here, to be precise, I like that one pretty...
🎵🎶Cold afternoon, I had no idea who you were, so casually you walked into my universe 🎶🎵.
World war 3 by Ruth Berhe filled the room with it's melody, my phone was ringing. I looked at the screen and sucked in a sharp breath, it was my mum, I haven't spoken to her since three days now, I sure won't hear the end of it.
"Talk to me momma",I said as I swivelled the chair around so that my back was to the table.
"Hey! Don't momma me",my mum cautioned.
"What is wrong with you Marc? Why in the world have you not been picking my calls?" Oh she's been calling?
"Mama".
"Let me talk! You've been ignoring my calls and at a time I wondered if you were in danger. I was ashamed when I had to call Jadeshola to ask of your wellbeing", she paused. " Do you know how I felt when he said you were fine and why didn't I call you instead,I had to wave it off dismissively like it was nothing,I didn't..."
" Mum,I called you when I landed".
" Can you hear yourself, Marc, can you? So calling me after you landed was the only thing I wanted from my son, right?"
" Mother, it's just been 3 days",I said trying to avert her fury.
" Tres (three)?"
" SI (yes)"
" Yo se (I know)! I'm not asking you to confirm, I'm just evaluating the level of your wellness to say not talking to your mother for 3 days is nothing", mum said getting angrier than earlier as her voice blared through the speaker.
There was a short moment of silence and I knew this was my chance to apologize and I took it.
" Madre,yo lo siento (mother, I'm sorry)".
No response.
"I really didn't mean to shun you,I've just been busy settling down,I actually planned to call you afterwards" I said again awaiting her response.
"I'm booking the next flight to Nigeria",was her response.
"Que(what)? Mum, no!"
"Yes son,I can't sit here while you get hurt over there".
" Madre, eso no es necesario (mother, that is not necessary)"
" It is " mum said firmly.
" Mum,trust me I would call you everyday, okay? I'm sorry for shutting you out all this while and I promise not to do that again".
"You won't bribe your way out of this? No es posible (it's not possible)".
"Really mum,I meant everything I said".
"Bien (fine), I'll let this slide but don't take it as a chance to rebel... okay?"
"Yes mother",I said a breathed a sigh of relief.
"So , como estas (how are you)?"
"Supér(great),and your dad is not doing any less too",my mum said in her usual chirpy voice,I swear I'd missed this.
