Going with Kamala Harris

A lot changed in July. Joe Biden dropped out of the race for president, and Democrats nominated Vice President Kamala Harris without controversy or infighting. She is smart and tough. Harris is a fighter going after Trump and Republicans. Yet there wasn't much of a record to tell us who Kamala Harris is politically. As Vice President, she's been a loyal supporter of President Biden, who has pursued a surprisingly Liberal course. Now, as the Democratic candidate, what does she stand for besides being against Donald Trump?

Vice President Harris has been a strong defender of abortion rights. However, she went back on her support of
Medicare for All and a ban on natural gas fraking. In August, she finally released her economic agenda, which includes tax credits for newborns, childcare, and first-time time homebuyers. She also wants a federal ban on price gouging of food and groceries. Furthermore, Harris picked the Governor of Minnesota Tim Walz as her running mate. He's a Progressive and Pro working class.

Most voters don't care much about policy proposals, and elections often come down to image and perception. Kamala Harris is tough and willing to go on the offensive against Trump and the Republicans. That's something too many Democrats seem unwilling or unable to do. The way she has made abortion rights an issue makes me think that if Democrats had done this all along, then Republicans wouldn't have been able to overturn Roe V. Wade.

At the time, this is being written, Harris leads Trump in several polls. But they could be wrong as Hillary Clinton and Democrats found out when Trump won the 2016 election. I hope she will keep pushing, and Democratic voters, along with independents, will support her. But I don't get caught up in all the hype generated by the media's coverage of Kamala Harris. Trump has millions of supporters, including moderates and independents. His support among blacks, especially younger people, has grown, too. He can still win this thing. But the Vice President has a very real chance. I'll be voting for her.
