The world you lived in was strange, to say the least. It was full of superhumans with magnificent, jaw-dropping powers, widely called quirks, that were various and unique. The streets often had some sort of drama going on. Danger and fear had become a normal occurrence, more than it ever has before the rise of superhumans. However, it also had so many more possibilities and hope for a better future.
Your name was Y/n L/n, a hero. That was the plan, at least! You wanted to be strong and independent while also being kind and selfless. That's all you wanted to be..., so how did it go so wrong? Let's start at the beginning. Way, way, way back at the beginning. Way.
You walked alongside your friends, Kacchan and Deku. You weren't allowed to play with other kids outside your community, especially those who will have quirks, so following them like you were was probably a bad idea. Even so, you couldn't help yourself from being drawn to their charisma. Deku was very kind and somewhat shy, and Kacchan was really ambitious and prideful. You loved to watch them interact and learn new things that were never told to you at home from them.
"Who's All Might, anyways?" You asked as you followed the two boys. Both of them looked over at you as if you had said something offensive.
"You mean you don't know him?" Deku asked. "He's a super cool hero with a really amazing quirk."
"How do you not know about him? Are you dumb or something?" Kacchan questioned, making you laugh nervously. "I mean, he's the number one hero. You've gotta be living under a huge rock to have missed him."
You thought for a moment before you said, "We don't talk much about heroes at my home. What's his quirk?"
Deku perked up. "No one really knows for sure," he said to you, shaking his hands excitedly. "But it makes him super strong and he's saved so many people! You should ask to come over to my house so that I can show you my favorite video of him." You averted eye contact quickly and smiled.
"I would really love to," you started. "But.., to be honest, if my parents found out I was talking to you guys at all, they'd be really mad." Kacchan looked at you now. "It's better if we're outside so I can see when they get home."
"Mad about what?" He questioned, his tone lathered in sass. "Don't tell me you come from some stupid, stuck up family or something."
"Something like that."
"Seriously?"
The three of you stopped at your destination— somewhat of a 'hideout' area (obviously the handiwork of children). There were some drawing supplies and a few chairs hidden behind the playground.
"Yeah. They don't like quirks," your voice was a bit weak as you said this. "They said that superhumans ruined society and that all they bring is death."
"That's stupid. Heroes save people."
"Yeah. I wonder what happened that made them think that?" Deku asked. You only sighed.
"We're part of a big community of people who also hate quirks. As far as I know, I have no ancestors or living family with a quirk. That's what I've been told."
"So you won't get a quirk either?"
"I guess not," you admitted. You couldn't help but be sad about it. Although you knew your family would hate you if you had a quirk, you wished every night for one ever since meeting your friends. They haven't gotten their quirks yet, but they talked a big game about them all the time. The way they made heroes sound almost made you want to be one. "I hope there's a way I can work alongside heroes even if I don't have a quirk one day. I don't hate them like my parents do."
