With a heavy sigh, you heaved the large bag of groceries onto the kitchen counter and watched as the items all fell out of the sides. Your keys and other belongings followed suit as the weight of it all exhausted you. Still, you couldn't help the excitement that was building up inside you at the idea of what you were going to do next.
After sorting through the items you needed to keep and putting away the rest, you began to clean up parts of the kitchen you were going to need. In the process you cut up some fruit for yourself to snack on, pulling your phone out to sift through the videos you just recently watched. As you nibbled on the apple slices, you revisited the cooking page that made a tutorial for a new recipe you wanted to try.
It was something you never tried before, maybe something your partner hasn't tasted before either. The ingredients were mostly already in your shared home, just a quick shopping trip to the nearest store for the remainder. You felt a little spontaneous with the cooking idea, and the thought of watching your lover enjoy a new meal made you giddy and even more excited.
Changbin was a foodie. He enjoyed the casual meals you make and the adventurous ones you occasionally did. It didn't really matter to him that he was trying something new, unlike you. For you, it was a little harder finding new recipes that met your taste. Even more so going to new restaurants for some dates and having to choose a very basic item, not willing to risk trying something you might not like.
Because you two were complete opposites in the food department, Changbin allowed you to make whatever you wanted. On your cooking nights, it didn't matter what you threw together. If you were satisfied, he was. Though, on his cooking nights, he would attempt to make something that catered to your needs a little more and do whatever for himself. If you didn't care for a specific ingredient, he would omit it in your portion and keep his the same.
It was easy, too, that he could easily have your leftovers without complaint. If you had gotten full too early or there was good remaining, Changbin had no problem eating your half that may have been a little different than his own. It was something he found very simple to adjust to when it came to your relationship.
This time, though, you really wanted to try something different. It was a tad bit out of your comfort zone with food types, and definitely not something you would attempt to order at a restaurant. However, you felt confident in your cooking skills, at least enough to recreate what the video showed.
Changbin was unaware of your new found hobby. Sure, he had seen you scroll through TikTok and food videos popped up more than usual. In his mind, though, you still were looking at things you'd usually eat. You weren't branching out, and you certainly weren't making anything new. Yet.
When he came home to an unfamiliar meal, his eyes were nearly popping out of their sockets. He could smell it in the hallway, as he came through the front door, but he didn't know what to expect. The amount of surprise radiating from his reaction made you laugh loudly.
"Surprise!" You tease.
His mouth dropped open. "Is it poisoned?!"
You snorted, moving to sit at the table where two plates were set. "No, see? I have a plate too!"
Changbin threw his duffle bag to the ground, slowly coming up to the table where you sat expectantly. He took in a deep whiff, trying to tell if it was something you had made before and he just couldn't remember. Defeated, he pulled out his chair and sat in front of the food, skeptical.
"This smells amazing," he says slowly, eyes narrowed accusingly. "What did you do to it?"
You rolled your eyes. "I wanted to try something new. And before you say it," you rushed out your words quickly, throwing up a hand to pause him from interrupting. "There's nothing wrong with me. I don't have a fever, I'm not sick, I'm fine. I found it on YouTube!"
Still hesitant even after the explanation, Bin smacked his lips together. "You eat it first."
You knew how hard it was for him to say that. He would eat the first bite no matter what the food was, especially when hungry. But you had truly thrown him for a loop, and he was beginning to worry there was a bitter meaning behind the change in your demeanor.
Deciding not to torture him any further, you took the first bite of the new meal. You were pleasantly surprised with the taste, and smiled at your lover happily. "See! It's fine."
Changbin was relieved. You were never good at hiding your reactions in your facial expression. You wouldn't be able to lie about the taste in a million years, even if you wanted to. To see that it was not only good, but safe, he also smiled brightly.
When you took another bite, you quickly glanced his way to see his reaction. His eyes lighting up at the flavor, even going as far as to lift his head quickly to look at you, was worth all the trouble in the end. You felt confident in yourself now. The entire reason you went out of your way was to experiment with different foods he and you both could enjoy. You loved his reaction and felt compelled to try more in the future, even as a picky eater.
"Babe, this is really good," he says a couple of times, pointing his silverware at you and thumbs up. "You did great."
The pride you suddenly felt made you hum in happiness. You tilted your head to the side to watch him happily munch away, going into his own world as he continued to eat. When you finished what you could of your own half, you pushed it towards him, gesturing to finish it.
He cleaned off his silverware before digging into your meal. "Thanks for the meal!" He shouts.
"You're welcome, love."
