Chapter 004: Love Letters of Tomorrow
•☽────✧˖°˖☆˖°˖✧────☾•

"I... I'm leaving now, sir," Christine said, her voice wavering as she stood before Damien. Her usually confident demeanour was replaced by a sadness he hadn't seen before.

"Alright, see you tomorrow," he replied with a smile, stepping onto the stairs of his house.

"Actually, sir, I'm leaving," Christine's voice quivered as her fingers tightened around the strap of her black shoulder bag.

"What do you mean?" Damien asked, his eyebrows arching in surprise as he tried to mask his confusion with a forced, wider smile.

"I've been offered a job in the States, and I'm resigning as your personal assistant," she replied.

Damien's eyes widened, his heart racing. In his journey toward becoming a better person, his feelings for Christine had deepened. She wasn't just his assistant; she had become like family to him, one of the closest friends he'd ever had.

"Goodbye, sir. Your contract expires at midnight, and after that, I shan't be your assistant any longer," Christine said as she made her way to the street. She raised her hand to hail a taxi, her departure feeling irrevocable.

As Christine's taxi drove away, a fresh wave of emotion surged within Damien. He had become the better person his mother had hoped for, but it seemed he was destined to bear the loss of yet another special person in his life.

"Are you alright?" Benedict, Damien's best friend and the one who had driven them back to the Lane Residence, asked as he noticed the shift in Damien's expression.

The setting sun bathed the sky in a soft pink hue, drawing their gazes upward in silent admiration.

"I understand now," Benedict added. "I'll miss Christine as well. She's my best friend, too, you know. And, more importantly, she's been your best personal assistant for the past two years."

As a sleek black car rolled by, Damien's curiosity was piqued. His gaze locked onto the shadowy figure inside, and a sudden wave of unease washed over him, making his pulse quicken.

Damien's eyes followed the black car as it disappeared into the distance. Frowning, he pulled his phone from his pocket. "I guess she might be in trouble," he murmured, dialling quickly.

"What? Why?" Benedict asked, his brow furrowing in confusion as he watched Damien's hurried actions.

The first ring was met with rejection, but on the second attempt, the call was answered.

"Hello?" Damien asked, his voice steady, though a hint of tension lingered beneath the surface.

"Mr. Lane?" Christine's voice came through the phone, a mix of surprise and concern. "Why did you call? Is everything alright?"

"Where are you now? Are you being followed?" Damien asked.

"Followed? What do you mean?" Christine asked, her voice tinged with confusion. Glancing up at the taxi's mirror, her eyes widened as she noticed a black car trailing close behind.

"There's a black car behind me, but that's normal—roads are meant for cars, right?" she joked, trying to mask the tears that slipped down her cheeks, the weight of leaving her boss finally sinking in.

"Christine, listen to me," Damien said. "Lose that black car before you go home."

"Why?" she asked.

"He's one of the people from my 99th case—the one who might just gone missing from prison after being proven guilty," Damien replied.

Before Christine could respond, a sudden gunshot rang out, piercing the silence. The sharp crack startled them all, and Damien's phone slipped from his grasp, crashing to the ground.

Author's Note:

The message of the song "I want It That Way" was used here. Christine clearly has affection for her boss, and now, since he seems to no longer need her assistance, she wanted to let him go now. She wants a relationship that is not that way (you'll find the real reason soon. No spoilers).

Also, Damien can see his fire to Christine. She is part of his new family and would not want her to leave.
