ADELINE ROSE hated fresh starts. Leaving everything behind to move on and start over. She knew that she needed it. But it didn't hurt any less.
Her father's passing had hit both her and her mom hard. This was for the best. Starting their new lives in the small friendly town.
Mystic Falls.
Soft patters filled the girl's ears as she rested against the car's window. Watching the dense forest of trees become distorted behind the rain.
Long lashes brushed over her cheeks as her eyes fluttered shut. The melodic taps on the windshield bringing a strange sense of comfort to her as her mind wandered.
What if that frightful night never happened? What if she hadn't seen her father be killed right before her eyes? She didn't remember it.. no, but she knew she saw something. There had been a missing piece in her memory that bugged her to no end.
An animal attack, they had said. That night when her father took her camping. In a way, she felt responsible. If they had just stayed at home, it would never have happened.
It had been a year, yet it still felt like yesterday. She knew her mom would never be able to grieve if they stayed.
"—ddy? Addy?"
The girl hummed as she turned to her mom, "Yeah?" A sad smile making its way to her face at the woman's worried expression. "Everything's good mom."
"Yes but.. i know you didn't want to leave everything behind Addy. I'm really sorry."
"Mom, it's okay," the girl stressed, her hand finding her mother's free one with a small squeeze. "Plus, how hard can it be to make a few friends?" She joked, smile widening when she heard a chuckle.
"Promise me you'll take this time to heal? I promise you i'll be alright." Adeline whispered, frowning when the woman avoided her eye.
Turning back to the window, she sighed. Continuing to watch aimlessly as the trees blurred by.
Adeline flinched back as she saw a man. Standing there, seeming to move with the vehicle.. without moving. The girl let out a gasp, her eyes locking with piercing ones as his head tilted—he was watching her.
"M-mom?" She swallowed, turning to the woman with a panicked expression plastered on her delicate face.
"Yes hun? What's wrong?"
Adeline was confused. Immediately returning her attention to the window to see.. nothing. Was she seeing things?
'Welcome to Mystic Falls' The sign eventually read. There it was. Her new home. But something—something just didn't feel right.
