Pain for Gain[1]

 A scream rippled out of my mouth my head splitting with pain no human should have to endure while I gurgled on my own blood. An awakening should be an accomplishment celebrated with your dear loved ones. Sadly, the pain and blood made this highly impossible the new powers engraving themselves in your body. Some powers felt like ice going through your veins making you feel cold while others were hot as fire burning through your veins.

Awakening were new with the dungeons and monsters appearing a few days after the first awakened ones. The awakened ones were commendable most people could never awaken and the few who did might go mad from the pain before committing suicide with the new powers. I had to make it through. The money on my mind as someone told me my power. I couldn't hear them as my conscience faded.

I thought about the start of this all the need for an awakening.with some gut wrenching news, the treatment my dad needed flashing through my mind, the hard hours done by him before the savings he made could barely hold us up for 3 months. I lived with him after the divorce. Our lives were comfortable with both parents leaving on good terms. My mom could barely stay afloat herself but tried not to touch her savings. She made sure to keep them aside for emergencies.

I didn't want to ask her for the savings my dads treatment getting so expensive that only a hunter could afford it. The costs build up over time a serious case of mana overflux commonly referred to as MOF could only be treated by a mana stone absorbing the mana.

Mana a kind of energy that was release by the great break. Beforehand theree were thousands of doors the doors color decided the difficulty. Gray gates were the most common and easiest, the only kind of gate ever artificially created costing a grade 3 mana stone and thousands of rune engravings. Hypothetically you could create different types of gates be it a monster gate or a maze. Either one was deadly past the gray level and sadly grays only dropped grade 1 mana stones. These were completely useless except for low level spells and weapons.

The gates order of difficulty goes up exponentially, the order being, gray, green, orange, yellow, red, blue, purple, and black. The black gates had one of a kind loot like weapons, armors, and grade 10 mana stones. These grade 10 mana stones had the power to do many things. THey were almost always kept and rarely sold the price starting at 500,000 but often brought up to millions and tens of millions.

These were usually used by mages to cast defensive barriers, blessings of fertility, teleportation circles, and all kinds of feats of magic. The second most common use was to enhance a building or item. These enhanced items and buildings could withstand the attack of a black level gates monsters for around 3 hours if attacked constantly. Luckily, these objects could be mended or repaired. Another one of the common uses is when they are used by blacksmiths. These blacksmiths could use it to make gold-level weapons or items.

Items have been discovered in 5 ranks, coal, iron, steel, gold, and platinum. Platinum items are only dropped in black gates but black smiths are convinced that if there is a grade 12 mana stone out there they could create one. The items are also grouped into 5 qualities in that ranks, broken, flawed, flawless, refined, and perfect.

Monsters have been found in 3 ranks unlike items, these ranks include common, elite, and boss. A boss monster of a gray gate is on the level of an elite in green gates. The difficulty scales like this, the elites being at the level of common for the gate ranked above. The least common kinds of monsters can only be found in black gates and are referred to as anomalies. These are at the level of an elite monster at the minimum but if you find an anomalous boss you run. These bosses are beyond the rank of a black gate. The only anomaly ever taken out was named "The accursed one, the one beyond reason, Kitty Cat" a dark panther looking monster named by the healer of the party who found it.
