"Good. Let's begin then." Matteo nods his head at the butler, who quickly begins carrying out food onto the table. The aroma is heavenly as the first course is revealed- A gourmet seafood platter.
The butler serves us both our food before leaving again, leaving us alone with our food and a bottle of expensive looking wine. Matteo looks at me across the table.
"This isn't how I'd imagined my wedding night to go." Matteo says, taking a sip of his wine. "But I guess this is the best it's going to get." He picks up a fork and spears a piece of sushi, holding it in front of my mouth. "Try this."
I hesitantly open my mouth, letting Matteo feed me the piece of sushi. It's divine, with the flavors exploding on my tongue. "Mmm" I can't help but say, causing Matteo to smile slightly.
Matteo smiles slightly as he watches me enjoy the dish. "Good, right? This is what money can get you. The finest food in the world." Matteo feeds me another piece, watching me intently as I eat. "Are you enjoying yourself so far?"
"Yeah yeah" I said.
Matteo's smile fades slightly as he continues to watch me, his expression turning serious once again. "You're not doing so bad so far. You are a fast learner." Matteo pauses for a moment, thinking. "Do you have any other skills besides playing the part of a loving wife?"
I respond "I know how to cook"
Matteo raises an eyebrow as he hears my answer. "You know how to cook? That could be useful." Matteo takes another sip of his wine. "I'll keep that in mind." Matteo reaches for the bottle of wine. "More wine?"
"No I don't drink to much" I say.
Matteo nods his head, setting the wine bottle aside. "Alright, more for me then." he says, refilling his glass.
As the dinner continues, I notice Matteo glancing at me occasionally with a contemplative look on his face. He seems to be thinking about something that I can't quite figure out.
Matteo eventually breaks the silence. "I've been thinking." he begins. "Since we're going to be married for the foreseeable future, I should tell you something about the life you're now in." Matteo takes a deep breath, as if bracing himself for something. "I am the boss of the Italian mafia." Matteo says bluntly.
"And?" I ask
Matteo smirks slightly. "You don't seem surprised." Matteo says. "Most people would be horrified to discover they've married into the mafia. I can't decide if you're brave or naive."
"I knew it" I say
Matteo's eyes narrow, suspicion apparent on his face. "How did you know? Who told you?" he asks, looking at me intently.
I respond "My parents they told me that I would be forced to get married with a Mafia boss."
Matteo's expression hardens, his eyes piercing into me. "Your parents sold you to me?" he growls, his fists clenching on the table. "You're parents sold you, their own daughter, into marriage with a gang leader?"
I sigh "yeah"
Matteo's expression is dark with anger. "I should have known. This arranged marriage bullshit." he muttered under his breath. "I should punish your parents. Selling their own daughter into marriage. They are pathetic excuses for parents."
"Calm down they're still my parents" I say looking into his eyes.
Matteo rolls his eyes.
"How can I calm down? Your parents sold you like a piece of meat. They don't deserve respect after what they did." Matteo says, his voice full of anger. "I can't believe I'm married to someone who came from such a weak bloodline,"
"Excuse me?" I said
Matteo glares at me, his eyes full of menace and anger. "Do you have a problem with what I said? It's the truth. You come from a weak bloodline. Your parents are weak. You're weak. How can I respect someone like you?"
I put my fork down and I look at him straight in the eyes
"You're the boss of the mafia, sure, but that doesn't mean you're the king of the universe. So be careful how you talk to me and my family."Matteo's expression darkens, his fists clenching on the table. "You dare to speak to me like that?" Matteo's voice is low and dangerous. "I could kill you with a snap of my fingers. I have more power and wealth than your entire bloodline combined. Watch your tongue."
"You watch your tongue, you're here talking bad about me and my family, what's wrong with you? What have I done to you." I say
Matteo laughs, a cold and cruel laugh. "What's wrong with me? You're asking me what's wrong with me? This marriage was arranged. I didn't want to marry you any more than you wanted to marry me. But here we are. And now I have to put up with a weak, annoying girl for the rest of my life."
"And it's going to be like that whether you like it or not so let's move on, I don't want to argue with you." I said in an angry tone.
Matteo's expression remains dark as he continues to glare at me. "Fine. We'll move on. But don't forget, while you may think you have power, you're nothing but a puppet held up by strings. I am the puppet master. If I wanted to end your life, I could do it without hesitation. Remember that." With that, Matteo stands up, abruptly leaving the room and leaving me alone in the dining room. The silence is deafening, and I can feel the weight of the tension in the air.
"Jesus Christ..." I say asking myself what was his problem.
As I sit alone in the dining room, I can't help but feel a sense of dread and unease. Matteo's words echo in my brain, his dark demeanor and his threats lingering in the air. I don't know what the future holds, but one thing is certain, my life has been completely turned upside down.
I sigh, standing up from the table and leaving the dining room. As I walk down the hallway, I hear Matteo's voice coming from the living room. Curious and wanting to hear what he's saying, I slowly walk towards the living room.
As I peek inside the living room, I see Matteo standing in front of a group of several armed men, each of them dressed in mafia clothing.
