The decision

The morning light filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow over the room. I blinked awake, still wrapped in the warmth of Marcos's arms, our bodies tangled together beneath the sheets. The night before had been intense, a mix of passion and connection that left me feeling both exhausted and deeply satisfied.

But as I lay there, my mind started to drift to the future, to the decisions we still had to make. The conversation we had been avoiding was looming over us, and I knew we couldn’t ignore it any longer. Marcos had mentioned that he’d received a job offer in my city, but we hadn’t had a chance to discuss it in detail. The excitement of the exhibition and the intensity of our reunion had pushed everything else to the back of our minds, but now it was time to face reality.

I shifted slightly, trying not to wake him, but he stirred anyway, his arms tightening around me. -Morning- he mumbled, his voice thick with sleep as he buried his face in my hair.

-Morning,- I replied softly, turning to look at him. His eyes were still heavy with sleep, but there was a hint of concern in them, a reflection of the thoughts that had been weighing on me.

-Something on your mind?- he asked, his voice more alert now as he studied my face.

I hesitated, not wanting to shatter the peaceful morning with the heavy conversation that was coming. But I knew we couldn’t avoid it any longer. -We need to talk about the job offer,- I said finally, my voice quiet but firm.

Marcos sighed, his expression growing serious as he nodded. -I know. I’ve been thinking about it too.-

He pulled away slightly, propping himself up on one elbow so he could look at me more directly. -The offer is good, Alex. Really good. It’s a long-term contract, and it’s exactly the kind of opportunity I’ve been looking for. But…-

-But it’s not just about the job,- I finished for him, my heart sinking as I realized how complicated this decision really was.

He nodded, his expression conflicted. -Exactly. This isn’t just about me anymore. It’s about us. And I don’t want to make any decisions that could hurt what we have.-

We lay there in silence for a moment, the weight of the situation pressing down on us. This offer was everything Marcos had been working toward, a chance to advance his career in a way that would set him up for the future. But it also meant committing to staying in my city for an extended period, something that could have serious implications for both of us.

-If you take the job,- I said slowly, trying to put my thoughts into words, -it would mean staying here, with me. It would mean ending the distance between us, but it would also mean making sacrifices. For both of us.-

Marcos nodded, his expression thoughtful. -I’ve been thinking about that too. I’ve worked so hard to get to this point, to build my career. But every time I imagine taking that job, all I can think about is how it would finally bring us together. No more distance, no more time apart.-

His words made my heart ache with a mixture of hope and fear. The idea of finally being together, of sharing a life without the constant separation, was so tempting. But I knew that we had to consider the long-term implications, not just the immediate relief of ending the distance.

-We need to be sure, Marcos,- I said, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside me. -This is a big decision. If you take the job, it means committing to staying here, with me. It means building a life together. Are we ready for that?-

Marcos looked at me for a long moment, his eyes filled with a mixture of determination and vulnerability. -I know it’s a big decision, Alex. But I also know that I can’t keep living like this, constantly wondering when I’ll see you again, when we’ll finally be able to just… be together. I’m tired of the distance. I’m tired of missing you.-

His words hit me hard, the raw emotion in them resonating with everything I had been feeling. The distance had taken its toll on both of us, and the idea of finally closing that gap was almost too good to be true. But we had to be realistic.

-And what about your career?- I asked, forcing myself to consider the practical side of things. -What happens if you take this job and it doesn’t work out? What if you end up regretting it?-

Marcos shook his head, his expression resolute. -I won’t regret it, Alex. Because this isn’t just about my career anymore. It’s about us. And I’m willing to take that risk if it means we can finally be together.-

His words sent a rush of emotion through me, a mixture of relief, hope, and a lingering fear of the unknown. But as I looked into his eyes, I knew that we couldn’t keep living in limbo, constantly questioning our future.

-Okay,- I said finally, my voice barely above a whisper. -If you’re sure, then let’s do it. Let’s take the risk.-

Marcos’s eyes softened, a smile spreading across his face as he pulled me into a tight embrace. -I’m sure, Alex. I’ve never been more sure of anything.-

We lay there for a long time, wrapped in each other’s arms, the decision finally made. It wasn’t going to be easy, and there would undoubtedly be challenges ahead, but the relief of knowing that we were finally on the same page, that we were ready to face the future together, was overwhelming.

As the morning light continued to filter through the curtains, I felt a sense of peace settle over me, the weight of the decision lifting as we lay there, content in the knowledge that no matter what happened, we would face it together.

And so, with the decision made, we began to plan for the future, for a life together that no longer involved the painful separation that had defined our relationship for so long. Marcos would accept the job, and we would move in together, finally closing the distance that had been between us for far too long.

As the days passed and the reality of our decision began to sink in, I felt a renewed sense of hope, a belief that no matter what challenges lay ahead, we would face them together, stronger than ever.
