When I finally looked up from my comics, I realized it had gotten dark outside. I left my room to find Maggie and found her sitting on a chair on the porch.
"Hey, Mag's," I said softly as I sat down on the floor beside her. "Hey, Daisy," she replied with a gentle smile. I asked her about the condition of the boy and we talked for a bit. But then another car pulled up, and two figures got out. It was hard to see from where we were, but they were definitely men. As they came closer, I could hear their voices.
"So, do we ring the bell? It looks like people live here." "We're past this kind of stuff, aren't we?" The second man sighed and climbed the stairs. He had dark skin and was covered with a blanket. He looked sweaty—was he bitten? "Having to be considerate," he muttered, and the other man followed.
"Did you close the gate up the road when you drove in?" Maggie called out, causing them to look over and see us. "Uh, hi. Yes, we closed it. Did the latch and everything," the other man answered awkwardly. He was Korean, wearing a white cap and holding a shotgun.
Maggie leaned forward, and the Korean man nodded to her. "Hello. Nice to see you again. We met briefly before. Hi there," he said, looking from Maggie to me. "Look, we came to help. Is there anything we can do?" the darker-skinned man asked, wincing in pain. He had a bandage on his arm with blood seeping through. Maggie stood up, leaning against the wall as I followed her. She glanced at his arm.
"It's not a bite. I cut myself pretty bad, though," he said, resting his head against the pillar. "We'll get it looked at. I'll tell them you're here," Maggie said, moving closer. "Come on, Daisy."
"We have some painkillers and antibiotics. I already gave him some, if Carl needs any," the Korean man said, pulling out pill bottles from his backpack. Maggie took them from him. "Come on inside. I'll make you something to eat," Maggie said, leading them inside. I headed back to my room.
A few hours later, I heard Grandpa calling for the IV. I could hear someone wheeling a table inside. I peeked out the window and didn't see Otis's car. Were they seriously going to do surgery on Carl without the right equipment? I was so scared that he might not make it.
Then, I heard the sound of a truck approaching and saw the headlights shining through the windows. Otis was back—thank goodness. A small smile crept onto my face, knowing that Carl might still have a chance.
I looked out the window and saw the driver's door swing open. But it was just Shane who stepped out. My heart sank. If Otis wasn't with him, something must have gone wrong. I slammed the window shut, not wanting to hear any more. I threw my comics aside and huddled in the corner of my room.
Otis had been a part of my life for as long as I could remember, and now it felt like everything was falling apart. First my Grandpa's wife, then her son. Now Otis.
I cried myself to sleep in my room, not moving from the corner all night. I guess I didn't want to move.
