The Wescott Gallery hummed with quiet activity as Zara made her way through the main exhibition space. Her second day had started early, with Olivia asking her to assist in setting up for a small, exclusive showing scheduled for that evening. As she carefully adjusted the lighting on a series of abstract sculptures, Zara found her mind drifting back to the drawing hidden in her portfolio.
"Ah, Zara!" Olivia's cheerful voice broke through her reverie. "There you are. How are you finding everything so far?"
Zara straightened up, offering a smile to her eccentric boss. "It's going well, I think. I'm enjoying learning about all the behind-the-scenes work that goes into running a gallery."
Olivia beamed, her wild red curls seeming to vibrate with enthusiasm. "Wonderful! I have a feeling you're going to be a natural at this. Oh, and before I forget, Dr. Vance called earlier. He'd like to speak with you when you have a moment. Something having to do with your artwork, I believe."
Zara felt a flutter of nervousness in her stomach. After her conversation with Kai last night, she wasn't sure how much she wanted to share with Dr. Vance, despite his evident expertise and interest in her work. She could easily trust Kai, but others she didn't know about. But she knew eventually she would have to show something, otherwise, her job would be a jeopardy.
"Thanks, Olivia. I'll give him a call later," Zara said, trying to keep her voice neutral.
As Olivia moved away to attend to other matters, Zara's gaze drifted to the large windows at the front of the gallery. Across the street, she could see activity in Everett's building. A group of people were moving in and out, carrying equipment and what looked like art supplies. They were busy at work and the movements didn't stop. That place would be up and running sooner than ever. The competition was real and Zara could feel the tension from across the road.
Curiosity got the better of her, and Zara found herself drawn to the window for a closer look. As she watched, Everett himself emerged from the building, directing the newcomers with a quiet authority. He paused for a moment, seeming to sense her gaze, and looked directly at the gallery. Their eyes met across the distance, and Zara felt a jolt of... something. Recognition? Anticipation?
Everett raised a hand in greeting, a small smile playing on his lips. Zara returned the gesture, feeling a blush creep up her cheeks. There was something about him that both intrigued and unsettled her.
"Quite the operation they're setting up over there," a familiar voice said from behind her.
Zara turned to find Kai standing there, his laptop bag slung over his shoulder. She hadn't expected to see him at the gallery today.
"Kai! What brings you here?" she asked, hoping her voice didn't betray the mixture of emotions his presence stirred in her.
He held up a flash drive. "Some updates to the catalog system. Olivia asked me to install them before the showing tonight." His eyes flickered to the window, then back to Zara. "So, what do you make of our new neighbor?"
Zara shrugged, trying for nonchalance. "He seems... interesting. There's clearly more to him than he's letting on."
Kai nodded, a thoughtful expression on his face. "I did some digging last night, after our talk. There's not much information out there about Everett Wolfe. It's almost as if he appeared out of nowhere."
Before Zara could respond, Olivia's voice rang out from the back of the gallery. "Zara, dear! Could you come help me with something?"
"Duty calls," Zara said with a small smile. "We'll talk more later?"
Kai nodded, his eyes holding hers for a moment longer than necessary. "Definitely. There's... a lot we need to discuss."
As Zara made her way to the back of the gallery, her mind was whirling. Between Dr. Vance's request to speak with her, Everett's mysterious presence across the street, and the unresolved tension with Kai, she felt as if she were being pulled in multiple directions at once. Everything tugging at her for attention.
In the storage room, Olivia was struggling with a large, ornate frame. "Ah, there you are," she said, blowing a stray curl out of her face. "Be a dear and help me with this, would you?"
As they maneuvered the frame into position, Olivia chatted away about the upcoming showing. "It's a small event, but very important. Some key collectors will be here, including Lena Castillo. Oh, and Dr. Vance, of course. He's bringing a guest, I believe. Someone he says has a unique perspective on emerging artistic trends."
Zara nodded, only half-listening as she tried to process everything. The mention of Dr. Vance brought her thoughts back to the drawing in her portfolio. Should she show it to him? To Olivia? The need for caution that she and Kai had discussed warred with her desire for understanding and validation.
As they finished setting up, Olivia placed a hand on Zara's arm. "You know, dear, I couldn't help but notice how captivated Dr. Vance was by your work. And now Everett Wolfe seems quite interested in you as well. You're making quite an impression in the art world already."
Zara felt her cheeks warm. "I... I'm not sure about that. I'm still trying to find my footing here."
Olivia's eyes twinkled knowingly. "Sometimes, Zara, the most profound artistic journeys begin when we're not even aware we've started walking the path. Trust your instincts. They seem to be serving you well so far."
With that cryptic advice, Olivia swept out of the storage room, leaving Zara to ponder her words. As she made her way back to the main gallery space, Zara couldn't shake the feeling that she was missing something important, some crucial piece of the puzzle that would make everything clear.
