jeongguk could vividly recall the events of that night. though there were times he wished his memory wasn’t so unforgivingly precise. every fragment of his long long past was etched into his mind as if carved in stone, inescapable. he longed to forget— to bury the scars, the voices, the images, the agony. but he knew couldn't.
he remembered he had just hit the age from where he became immortal. his parents were ecstatic, since jeongguk was royal blooded and definitely special considering how quickly he had matured into his true form. they had planned to hold a small ceremony to celebrate his transition into immortality.
unfortunately, that ceremony never happened.
what he remembered most clearly was his parents. his father; tall, firm, and intimidating. his mother, the epitome of beauty and grace. vampires were renowned for their extreme beauty, but his mother might just be the standard for it. her beauty was one of the reasons his father had been so opposed to living among humans. yet, he loved her so deeply that when she expressed her desire to live in a distant small village somewhere in northern europe, he couldn’t refuse.
however, his father's blind love soon proved to be deadly.
jeongguk knew something was wrong when he used to see an unfamiliar man, a human standing out of the house talking with his mother after sunsets. he could understand much of what was happening when the man leaned to kiss his mother, hand on her waist. though his mother refused, saying something in complete rush before closing the door on his face. jeongguk had seen the red glint in her eyes.
oh no.
did the man see it too? that was all on his mind. not the fact the man was trying to kiss his mother, nor the fact his mother almost let it happen.
his mother had rushed to him, telling him constantly to not tell his father. jeongguk was not going to, it didn't bother him to the extent that he would have a conversation about it with his father. the man who was always in his study room whenever at home or out in the dark during nights.
moreover, his bond with his mother was far stronger than the one he had with his father. so of course whatever she said he complied to. although he did ask her once, “are you having an affair?” his mother had said, “no” that's all.
jeongguk had believed so, for he had no reason not to. however, one question kept wandering in his head. had the man seen the glint in his mother's eyes? were they in danger?
